Who here with automatic trannie runs an aftermarket trannie cooler? I've been getting mixed feedback and I want to ask you guys. Are they even needed ? My dad said they can just be bypassed into one another but his mechanical skills have been proven faulty. Thanks guys!
An aftermarket trans cooler is NEVER a bad idea. Heat kills transmissions. The lower you can get your fluid temps, the longer your trans will live. It's that simple .
I just put one in the Mustang. I haven't driven the car yet (well 10 minutes doesn't really count).
If you do any racing or put in a high-stall converter you should probably get one. Any sort of brake-stand will increase tranny temp a lot, so to be on the safe side a tranny cooler is a good idea.
I put my cooler in after the radiator just because thats what the instructions said.
My Blazer on the other hand is only using a tranny cooler. I'm guessing tha the tranny that I got replaced when I first bought it probably left shavings in the stock radiator part so they just hooked up a tranny cooler.
Running a tranny cooler is never a bad idea. Being a trans builder I can attest that heat kills transmissions. If you run any kind of stall I would run a large cooler and bypass the radiator. I usually use the newer style stacked cooler. They are harder to flush however but do a much better job than the fin style.
I run a b&m cooler on my II, the fluid comes from the trans to the radiator, then goes to the cooler in front of the radiator, and back to the trans. I was told that this is wrong, but I belive that if you cooling system is up to the task, why not cool the trans fluid to around what the engine is, then cool it some more at the external cooler. Works for me... Just don't use the zip tie mounts, make some out of aluminum to mount it from the radiator about one inch
Yeah, don't be like me... I got lazy and didn't install my B&M cooler back in after I swapped in the new eng/trans and with me running headers, it lasted about 2 or 3 months (weekend driving) before it started slipping and after that the fluid browned and smelled burnt and the fluid looks like liquid glitter. Now it takes like 3500 rpms to get it to back up....not good.
