tranny falls out of 2nd...wtf?

it happens when im driving normal. it'll falll out as the clutch is realesed, but when i put it in the 2nd time, it almost always engages. when i romp on it and shift it hard into 2nd,it'll ALWAYS GO IN. even when im driving normal and i shift it all hard, it usually goes in. the tranny has been run on almost 70% tx7 and the rest ATF.

MABYE THE HIGH QUANTITY OF TX7 IN THE TRANNY IS CAUSING IT TO FALLL OUT OF GEAR?

MABYE THE STOPPER ON MY B&M SHORTTHROW IS OUT OF ADJUSTMENT?

MABYE ITS MY SYNCHRO (god i hope not)


anyways any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks a bunch

Sounds like the stopper needs to be backed off a bit. Synchro would grind when you went into gear.

If the blocker rings for 2nd gear is bad, it will cause it to pop out of gear.

Yup, i had it happen.

The fix is having the trans rebuilt with a small parts kit.

If it is the problem get it done sooner or than later, because the trans is going to get worse and worse and you'll ruin more than just the minor stuff.

do you think its the shift fork for definate? can i replace that with the trans still in the car.

most definitely you're going to have to pull the tranny to fix whatever's got ya stumped, unless its your short throw out of adjustment, but IMO fourth would also pop out of gear if that were the case. hope for the worst, so you're not sideswiped with a disaster

well the thing is, im selling it, and the only reason this guy's kinda hesitant is cause of this problem. shoud i at least try to adjust the shifter?

Might as well try, it's not gonna hurt anything. Sounds like it's something a little harder to fix, though.

Blocker ring or bent shift fork. Neither is a quick and easy fix. Mine would pop out of second if I let off the gas. It would make a bang like the tranny fell out on the ground. I fixed the problem by installing a new Tremec but I tore it down and found the blocker ring worn.

If your selling it drop a 4 banger tranny in there.....Did I just say that? LOL

Shift forks dont bend they crack and fall apart. There cast iron.

No... They're cast aluminum. If they were cast iron, they would actually bend. Aluminum just cracks. I had cast iron shift forks in my Tremec 3550... Can't destroy those things.

ok, so i went out and went 1 full turn in with the bottom stopper, drove it around and it seemed to work a little bit better.

it still falls out once and awhile, but i think i could of made it a little bit better (sure hope its not the whole plecibo effect).,

anyways, when i bulled the dust cover off of the shifter, i noticed a decent amount of very fine metal shavings; what could this mean... the thing is, theres been metal shavings in there since i got it. whenever i clean them out they just come back a little bit later.

anyways... any thoughts?

what exactly is the blocker ring? im familiar with the innards but can't exactly picture what is meant by this


anyway, those metal shavings are probably just wear and tear on the transmission, as long as they're not too excessive for the mileage since u last cleaned it i wouldn't worry about it too much

Mine does the same thingamnit: . I can shift it hard and it always goes in too, but if I take my time to shift it will grind. I found out if put it in gear when theres no "load on the tranny", like if I put it in 2nd while the engine is on its way revving down it will grind, but if i put it in 2nd and the rpms isnt going up or going down in between the shifts (if that made sense to you) then 90% of the time it wont grind. I just dont have the time and money to rebuild it, so it will have to do for now

Its not that hard to fix. If that is the only thing you want to fix, take it out, take it apart to get to second gear, find whats broke or worn, replace it and reassemble. I did this to one just before we sold it. Cost about $140 in parts, and took me a day. If you are careful and clean the case, you can probably get by without removing the countershaft.
