Tranny Fluid through the shifter

Did it last night, it' pretty easy except it sucks to get the boot off, and do'nt pour too fast you'll end up with an oil slick under your car.All you have to do is take off the leather cover, take off the 4 bolts for the boot and then the 4 bolts for the shifter and pour

sweet thanx man...easier than i thought....i didn't want to do it the normal way cuz i don't have a jack at my girlfriends house and i'll be there tonight and i just don't feel like pumping it in....in other words...i'm just a lazy b*stard

I do not think the oil will make it to the main case. It's a good idea if you dont have the tools. But the oil would have to come down the shifter shaft and thats at the top of the tranny. The only hole to get the oil in the tranny is through the 5th reverse rail and thats small. If you must do this park the car on a really steep hill!!!
I'm not even sure if any oil is supposed to be in the tailshaft? I have my tranny ripped apart right now sitting on the ground.

see this is what i thought ^^^ how would the fluid run down the tail shaft into the main case,,, it would have to be parked on a steep hill with the nose pointing down

I have added fluid through the shifter on my last 3 trannies with no issues as long as you dont over fill it.....just my .02

The thing is the...top oil plug on the main case is actually below the 5th reverse rail. Your not oiling the main gears just the shaft and the 5th driven gear and probably your drive shaft.
There is no way to get the oil in the main case unless you live on Mt. Everest.

I just checked everything with my tranny its exploded and laying on the ground next to me. I would suggest too pull the plugs from now on.

These gearboxes are our weak link and tranny fluid is important as hell. If I changed my tranny fluid I probably wouldnt have blown out my counter shaft and input gear. (Maybe endplay was wacked out?) I remember draining it after I blow it up and barley anything came out. Just learn from my mistake guys and change that oil properly. :)

Guy's to clarify the issue on filling through the shifter.

Yes, you can fill the T-5 this way.

There are other passageways for the oil to flow into the main case. The tailshaft housing IS supposed to be filled with oil. I am looking at a t-5 maincase RIGHT now and there is one big hole the size of a dime on the bottom of the case that would allow fluid to flow from the maincase to the tailhousing very easily. It's at the lowest point as well. No need to park your car at any special angle. The fluid will flow fine. Also if thats not enough, there is a large area around the 5th shift rail that fluid will slosh through on acceleration and decelleration.

So filling the T-5 through the shifter will work fine. As long as you use 2.8 quarts, no need to really check the top plug as long as you are sure you get all the old fluid out

I believe the 2.8 quarts is a dry fill capacity (???), they may take less when just changing. To me anyway, not worth the risk of overfilling -- especially since you're under the car and within 6 inches of the fill plug anyway.

if you are worried about overfilling, yank the top plug on the side of the tranny, and stick a long funnel with a flex tube down the shifter hole in the trans tunnel and stick the funnel into the top fill hole. Proceed to fill until it spills over onto your white driveway, and you're set.

I saw an article in 5.0 mustangs they were putting in a B&M shifter while they were doing that they drained the tranny oil, then filled the tranny from the top where the shifter bolts up, thats where I learned it from. the oil should escape through 5th's bearing or else when you fill it the other way 5th wouldn't get any oil.

Did it last night. Worked perfectly. The only hold ups really where getting the boot off. You can get the closest 2 bolts off fine and the top left one off ok...but the top right one is a bitch. all i did was take 3 bolts off and then pull the rubber out from the metal plate. after that i took the same formation of bolts off where the shifter goes on the tranny and just loosened the top right one so i could just slide the shifter over so i could get the fluid in...i had no problems with the fluid at all, went down fast too!
