Tranny problem

Ok, so I think something is wrong with my transmission.

I have a 2004 GT Vert with 43k miles. With a 5 spd.

It’s got a CAI, stock MAF, 70mm T/B, TrickFlow plenum, Mac pro-chamber with cats, Mac cat back, FRPP 3.73’s, FRPP aluminum driveshaft, and a Diablo predator with a custom tune. Everything else is stock, the tranny is stock, my shifter is stock.

So it’s getting really hard to put the car in gear at times. Like damn near impossible, it’s REALLY stiff and hard to shift into. It started out with reverse every once in a while. Now it’s reverse and sometimes 1st or 2nd. What is the problem? Is my transmission starting to take a dump?

Is my clutch going out?

I saw a post on hear that maybe changing the tranny fluid would help, is this true?

Anyone else have this issue or know what is causing it? My worry is that it will get worse and worse, because now it’s like every time I need reverse it’s a battle to get it in gear.

It’s my daily driver, yeah I drive it hard some times, but I don’t beat the ***** out of it or anything like that…..

With transmissions I always recommend doing that which is cheapest and easiest to do first: change fluid.

A lot of times having the fluid changed will fix the problem. Just take it into the shop and have them diagnose it.

If the fluid swap doesn't work it is probably the syncros going bad...

Ok, i'll call around to see if a shop can change out the fluid 1st.

Whats a normal price to pay for that?

And what kind of fluid should I have them replace it with if I have a choice?

wow tons of info here. i have read a bunch of pages while here at work so far....


so i'm going to try and to flush out the old fluid and put new fluid in. but since i have a manual trans, which fluid should i use?

royal purple?

I have the same problem as you! To get my car into reverse in need to turn off the car and put it in reverse. I just changed my transmission fluid (by the way I used mobile 1 automatic trans. fluid around 3.4 quarts) but i still have the same problem, the transmission being stiff. I have been reading alot and i think its the clutch engament. I think an adjustable firewall piece and new quadrant might fix the problem.

hmmm, so you have a 5 spd. but you used auto tranny fluid?


why would an ajustable firewall and quadrant fix it?

Yeah even though its a 5-speed it still uses automatic trans fluid. The reason I'm going im buying the adjustable firewall and the quadrant is that I feel the clutch pedal is way to low, it engages very fast and i think that the clutch is somewhat engaged even though I have the pedal pressed (I guess, this is the only option I have before being a new transmission). Anybody might have some more info?

To see what other things could be checked before buying an adjustable cable kit. when I changed my stock clutch to my King Cobra I think the self adjusting quadrant didnt work or something. I have tried to readjust (by holding the pedal up and then pressing on it) and still feels the same!

does putting it in 1st gear then reverse not work ? try that
reverse has no synchro

you may want to check your cable free play..

you should be able to lift your foot 1-2 inches off the floor before the clutch will start to let out ( the rpm's will drop)

try this in first gear at a stop..

1. put car into first gear

2. put foot on clutch all the way to the rug..

3. very slowly let out and try to feel how far you have come off the floor before the rpm's begin to drop and the car will try to move or stall..


If it's less than the amount I said your cable is too loose. this will cause you to have insufficient clutch air gap and the symptoms of this will include.

hard to get car into gear at a stop, possible grinding in high rpm fast shifts..

I have a tranny/clutch issue as well,SVTTECH. You say the clutch should engage approx 1-2 inches from the rug. Mine is a bit** to shift since the clutch engages almost at the "top". The damn thing shifts like an old truck! The clutch itself feels strong, it just seems that when the previous owner replaced it, the clutch wasn't adjusted at all! How can I "lower the action" (as us guitar players would say)? Can someone please tell me how to adjust this thing?
