Tranny Question

No, not that kind, the car kind...

So I cant ignore it anymore, I have metal in the tranny fluid, it's real fine particles, what does this indicate? How long till the tranny takes a dump, how bad is it? How do I fix it? what's it take to cram a AOD in a 72? It's the original C-6 with about 70k miles. Thanks.

first thing to do is have the trans power flushed to get all the old fluid and metal particles out of the trans. as for how long it will go, cant say. it might die tomorrow, it might last another 50,000 miles or so depending on how you drive, and how you maintain the trans. as for swapping in an AOD, it will fit in place of the current C6, and you might even be able to keep the stock crossmember. assuming you are talking about a small block ford(289, 302, 351w, 351c) you just need a 164 tooth flexplate with a 28oz balance factor and an 11.4" converter bolt pattern(which if you have a 351c then likely you are there regarding the flexplate but check to be sure). you will also need a throttle valve cable system from some place like lokar, and make sure you adjust it properly otherwise you WILL burn up an AOD in short order(most dont even last a block!! ).

Lame. I dont drive it a whole lot, and I'm not to rough on it (anymore). Thanks though. I thought Aod's were tougher than that, I mean, the new stangs are putting out as much as my car. I guess I was using Aod as a generic term. What about those electric overdrive add on kits, maybe one of those and a aluminum driveline?

The AOD's are not stronger than the C4s C6s that our big stangs came with.

I did a lot of searching online and elswhere, reading everything I could find about the AOD tranny, and swaping it into our big bodied stangs.

In the end I decided to go with a Tremec 3550 manuel when my C4 died on me.

(Don't buy any tranny from Autozone. They are CRAP!!!!!!!!!!! We got the first one to replace the C4 I toreup becuase I stupidly replaced a valve backwards after a fluid change, and it went like 50 feet before we lost all but one forward gear. The guy at the store took one look at the metal on the magnet we pulled out the pan and ordered me a new one no problem. Except when with in a week of installing the second one it slipped in second gear he couldn't help me, and the remanufacturer wouldn't do didly.)

Anyway, you can swap an AOD into your 72. You will probably be able to reuse your stock crossmember, although you may have to modify it a hair. The other stuff rbohm said about flexplate and the aftermarket throttle valve cable are 100% spot on.

The TV cable issues are why I decided against going with an AOD and renounced my pledge to never own a manuel tranny. You should be able to find more info on the AOD swap on the forum. Search over in the 5.0 section. Just keep in mind that the carb on our cars requires the special TV cable, and proper adjustment to make the AOD work.

I still havn't got my friends Cougar running with the AOD we put in it yet. I used the Lokar kit to hook up the TV setup. Easiest thing in the world. Or at least I thought it was. I'll find out how "easy" it was once the motor is running and I can check the TV preasure with the engine on.

That said, the AOD is not a weak transmission. It simply is manditory that the TV be properly adjusted or the trans will burn itself out in EXTREMELY short order.
