Hey,

I got a 04 3.9 v6 with 50k miles on it. And I put roughly 15k of those miles on it. And ever since I got it I've noticed some "rough shifting" which involves 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. Whenever they shift up around 3,000 to 4,000 rpms I get a jerk out of them. I dont hear any clunking or grinding, I only ever get the rough jerk that even the passenger can notice.

Also, the tranny fluid was changed by the ford garage when I first got it.

And by the way, I talked to some friends that mentioned to me about after-market shifters that make the tranny shift harder. I thought this sounded strang though..... but if they do make something to cause harder shifts, is there any easy way for me to find out?

Is this an automatic or manual transmission?

If it's a manual, are you popping the clutch up too quickly when you shift? That's about the only way i can imagine it would jerk on the shifts.

Does the clutch slip? Put it in 4th gear at a low speed and floor it and see if it slips

Nah, its a automatic, but that makes me wonder if the clutch mite be going bad then. I wonder if that could be it?

Clutch? More like Clutches. Automatic transmissions today have multiple clutch disc's and plates that make up the Clutch Pack located inside the transmission. It's not as simple as replacing a clutch disc you can find on manual transmissions.

Your vehicle jerking while shifting could be a sign of wear on your clutch plates. I would have your fluid checked and or changed again to see if that will help the issue. Particles in the fluid could be causing the the transmission to jerk. If not, you might want to start looking at a overhaul in the future.

Another possible issue could be that your engine is missing and causing jerking when the transmission shifts. A tune up might also help.

But if it was me, I'd have a transmission specialist look at it. You don't want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere if your transmission quits. And if you have a extended warranty on your vehicle, it's a good time to use it.

On a personal note, the transmission on my Mustang died on me at 9000 miles. Just locked up, would not shift, nada. Ended up being a faulty torque converter. Ford ended up replacing the whole transmission under warranty.

Good Luck!
