Since my speedo AND odometer are both not working, I was thinking it may be the tranny speedo gear (not even sure if I have the verbage right). Where is this, and is this fixable at home in the garage, and how do I go about, basically, Im with respect to this issue, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

it might be your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) the tranny speed-o gear is connected to this.

basically 1 9 or 10mm bolt holds this inplace, its on the drivers side of the trans near the tailshaft. simple to remove

How are you doing correction for speedo with your 373s if you didn't swap the gear? The normal corrective gear for that ratio is a 23 tooth chrysler gear that does not mesh and will eventually wear down, resulting in the symptoms your describe. I know for the T5 if you go above 327s you are not using a ford part for a corrective gear anymore... I'm not sure if its any different for the AODE.

A shop did my gears in like 1996. They put the correct gear in. It's just now, the odometer AND speedometer are both NOT working.

the gear you buy does not fit perfect its something all stang owners deal with when changing gears and installing speedo they wear out over time. more than likely the plastic speedo gear is stripped, pull it and see if it is. let us know. also odometer will not work if speedometer doesnt work unless the speedometer guage itself was broken.and viseversa.

For me to tell you how many years my 23 tooth gear has given me trouble free service would be some what misleading as my Stang is mostly a week end toy.

however

I have put about 15k on the clock with that gear and no probs so far.

Maybe that will give some perspective here!

isnt the highest you can go with a t5 a 3.55 without changing the drive gear? just wondering considering im floating on 3.55 or 3.73 and the determining factor for me could be just this info.

RC, I have heard of the 23 tooth gear wearing down also. It's not a perfect match to the drive gear in the tranny, so it will eventually wear out. It sounds like you've got the right idea to check the gear itself first (and replace it with one that matches what is in there now) and then suspect the VSS if the gear is good or speedo doesn't work after the gear change (both the gear and VSS might be bad). You might just be lucky and be able to find that the plug on the VSS is loose or just needs to be reseated. Good luck and happy hunting.

The highest you can go, and still use only Ford speedo gears, is 3.27s. The highest you can go and use that 23 tooth Chrysler gear mentioned above is the 3.55s.

The 23 tooth gear in the 3.73s will be off by a couple percentage points.

Bill302 - I don't know where you got your info, but I've never heard of a Ford replacement gear having premature wear. I researched the hell out of this because my car came with 3.27s (wife wanted more oomph on the highway in 5th so the husband put in 3.27s for her) and I wanted to make sure my speedo / odometer were dead on. (They were, he did it right.)

Using the 23 tooth gear doesn't have anything to do with which ratio is used as far as working or meshing up to work with the original drive gear.

IIRC, a 21 tooth gear is used with 355's and it is very close.

The drive gear will work with the 23 tooth driven gear whether it be 373's, 390's or 410's.

The amount of accuracy will decrease with the 23 tooth gear the farther from 373's you go but, it will still work.

As some have said, the life of that driven gear may shorter due to it not having a perfect mesh with the original drive gear.

adam i can't find where i said anything about ford replacement gears having pre mature wear. i did quote you saying,
"read this quote from black95GTS.(The normal corrective gear for that ratio is a 23 tooth chrysler gear that does not mesh and will eventually wear down, resulting in the symptoms your describe. I know for the T5 if you go above 327s you are not using a ford part for a corrective gear anymore... )

in this statement i was refering to the 23 tooth gear.but if i said ford replacement gear in the past i made a mistake and meant the 23 tooth chrysler gear you were refering too.

anyway RC have you found the problem yet.
