One of my buddies called me today and said he is going to pick up a 2001 Trans Am Monday. Should I go run and hide or will I be able to run him down on the track once I get the stage II cams and 4.10 gears installed? I think those cars are under rated at 325hp stock.

It's an ls1, so it's more like 350bhp. They run low to mid 13's on average with a decent driver and track. A couple stock fbody's have gone 12's bone stock on stock rubber, but it's not the norm. Should be a drivers race. 4.10's are not going to help you, probably hurt you unless you have a drag radial or slick, unless you can slip the heck out of the clutch and have great track prep.

A buddy of mine ran 200 passes in his stock auto TA at HRP over 3 years. He was a track freek. Bone stock. Averaged 13.30's every time. His best pass was a 13.22 at 107.

Is his car stock? If he has bolt ons and exhaust, your probably in trouble unless you outdrive him.

auto or 6 speed? your keeping your stock heads right? with my new setup i can run with em. but if your leaving stock heads on you might be a step behind. also the biggest thing is hooking it up.

If his car is completely stock, you have a chance. I beat a couple of bone stock LS1s with my car when it was naturally aspirated with all bolt-ons except headers, but as soon as they start to be modded, all bets are off. My buddy ran a 12.9 at 114 mph (2.28 second 60') in his full bolt-on Camaro.

Of course, with the blower, I pick on the cammed ones now

A buddy of mine ran his stock, full weight, auto, street tire Camaro SS to a 12.9x @ 108 mph.

Same car, different skin.

Driver's race for sure. LS1 owners are always confident. Get some spray.

Your going to need some tires and hope they can't drive (even an auto).... 13.30's is very normal with some crazy mph.

My friends box stock 99 SS with an auto runs 13.4 all day long on street tires. So who knows, you may or may not win.

They always seem to trap high for their ET. For example, consistent 13.4s at 107 mph last Friday. Why is that? When I was N/A, I was running 13.6s at 103-104 mph. A 107 mph trap speed should be enough to run high 12s.

They trap high b/c none of them launch very hard to get good sixties.... They will shatter the rears if they're stock. Therefore their et's show a lot less then they are capable. This is why they rape a lot of cars on the street from a roll. Mph is crazy. 107 is good for low 12's.

Yes, I agree. Many bolt on ls1 cars go high 11's with the stock heads and cam once they get the 12 bolt rear end and slicks. Their stock rear end is litterally a time bomb with anything more than street tires.

I could care less about beating one of them. I do like both cars (Z28 and Camero). When my wife(now exwife) was looking a buying a car we looked at them. She has always liked Trans Am. We drove a W6 Trans Am with I believe a 6 speed manual. I drove the. That thing was unbelievably fast. I believe the HP rating was 335. In the end, we bought another Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. At that time, Consumer Reports magazine give both Camero' and Trans Am a poor rating for realiabilty. The Mustang and Eclipse was rated higher. It's not always about HP and speed. I love Stangs because I believe it is the true sports car. It has survive where other sports cars have not. That's saying alot. We can make our cars perform better if we want to. I even had a 68 Firebird with a small block 400 bored 30 over when I was in high school. Yes, it would out run my current GT. With that said, I wouldn't trade my old Firebird for my GT. My GT offers so much more than my Firebird ever did. It was nice to have a monster HP car. Sadly, that car was totaled in a accident on a rainy day in May of 1982. I do miss it because I had plans for the car. It took 2 yrs of hard work to build her back up and a split second to destroy it. The accident wasn't my fault. The other driver was ticketed for her actions. Be careful. Pearl02.
