Last weekend I installed a B&M shift improver kit in the Cobra. Since the kit didn't come with a new filter I went to Kragen (old one in hand) to get a new one before I installed my new chrome pan in filled it with fluid. The parts guy had 2 part #s (one with hump. the other with open slot) so I whipped out the old one to match with the new one. Mine has the hump in it and of the 2 his computer showed the only one he had in stock matched my hump. Good so far right, I took it home installed the filter mounted the valve body back in the trans and went to install the pan but the pan won't fit. It appears the hump filter hits the pan leaving about 1/4" gap.

Finally to my guestion, since they list 2 filters for the C4 one with hump the other with an open slot can I swap to the other filter without creating any problems?

Hey Jeff, I'm actually holding the hump filter in my hand right now and now I see that it won't work. I was on the TCI website (where I got my trans) and they show two filters. Here's the link. There is s sidenote next to one of the filters that says it must be used with aluminum deep pan or factory pan. That would be the humped filter. So it looks like the only reason there is two filters is that there are different pans. I'd say get the open slot one and you're back in business.

The standard II pan is deep than most stock C4 pans. I've even seen a couple with factory installed baffels. If your stock pan is deeper than your chrome replacement than you likely have troubles with the Stock II filter. You can switch to the other filter without any issue. But remember that you will need a little less fluid with the shallow pan.

Yes my stock pan is baffled, the chrome pan isn't but it's got a drain plug. I guess I'll pick up the other filter and give it a try. As far as pan dimensions the only part that's different is the front of the chrome pan is about 1/4 inch shallower than the stock pan.

Greater capacity of trans fluid = better.

But is a 1/2 qt. that big a deal? I'm also thinking about adding the B&M external filter setup which would give back that lost fluid, plus some.

Nah, 1/2 quart isnt gonna make it or break it. But I'd probably just use the bigger stock pan and weld in a threaded bung for use with a drain plug. (I still can't comprehend why the factory made oil pans with drain plugs, but didnt make trans pans with plugs!)

Went with deep pan

OK so here's what I ended up doing. Instead of switching filters and using the slightly shallower chrome pan, I found a deep chrome pan that adds 2 qts to the trans. The pan is 4" deep at the deepest point with a drain.
