I am running a stock 5.0 hooked up to a world class T-5. Last night I made a fourth to third shift to pass someone and basically blew up third gear. It went into third just fine until I let out the clutch under power and heard a noticeable pop and it kicked out of gear. Now it sounds like a rock tumbler in all gears and if I put it back in third it’s an even louder rock tumbler with no gear (car won't go).

I have had friends that have shredded third gear on the way up but my tranny sounds a little different. For what it is worth I have a Hurst short throw shifter with positive stop bolts and I have no problems like this before. The transmission use to have a lot more power put to it when I had a supercharged set up and it held together fine ( maybe the stress is finally catching up ).

Any ideas? I don't want to dump a lot of money into this right now so I am thinking a used transmission or rebuild may be the way to go. Does anyone know of any sources for such items? I have been told that standard rebuild kits do not come with a counter shaft and they is the expensive part, so with that I am thinking I may go with a used one of a mustang that is being parted out.

Input?

If you don't know someone who is good with transmissions, who can take yours apart and diagnose it, get a book on T-5s, study it, and take apart and diagnose the transmission yourself.
Once you know what's what, you'll get an idea how much it will cost to fix.

You can get used for cheap, the parts you'll need to fix yours will be way more expensive than a cheap used one.

FREE T-5 assembly/disassembly manual available on Tremec website, rebuild is not difficult if you are mechanically inclined, but individual parts can get expensive. D&D in wixom michigan is your best source for parts and tech info. If your'e gonna buy a used trans, get a 90-93 model, they are the strongest of the factory installed versions. Only way to tell is the small tag aluminum tag that is attached to the tail housing on one of the bolts. This tag has the trans ID # which you can cross reference on the D&D site or Tremec's.

Why not get a T-56 Viper spec instead of rebuilding

He said he didn't want to blow a lot of money on this, and a ciper spec t56 swap would be a lot of money.

t-5's are VERY easy to work on.

The thing is blowing 3rd gear tends to take out a good chunk of the internal hard parts. Those parts can get expensive.

Better off buying a 100-200 T-5 that is drivable and rebuilding it. Very easy to do.
