I just had my t-5 rebuilt about a week ago. Before the rebuild I had a lot of grinding going into 4th gear and sometimes 5th, and occasionally couldn't get into 1st or reverse without a lot of trouble. As I was driving off from the shop after the rebuild I put it into 4th, and that same horrible grinding was there. So of course I went back and talked to the guy about it, and he told me that it was normal because of new blocker rings (?) and that after they developed a wear pattern (in about a week or so) it would be like new.

So I've been driving it for a few days and the grinding in 4th has not changed at all. Then yesterday I got stuck in 3rd gear. At a stop light. With tons of cars behind me. Angry drivers, too. I managed to get off the road with the help of a pedestrian, and eventually got it to come out of gear. I called the guy again, and he gave me the same answer (about the blocker rings). The more I drove yesterday the more it got stuck in 3rd gear, and many times it wouldn't go into 3rd. So I had to start skipping 3rd and going from 2nd to 4th. Then today it began to stick in 4th gear.

At the same time I had the tranny rebuild, I had a new clutch installed, mostly because the old one was way too heavy and hard to push, plus the throwout bearing was shot. The bearing made a little noise, but nothing too bad. Now the throwout bearing makes a constant whining noise that only stops when the clutch is depressed. Once again, I asked the guy about this, and he says it is normal, even though it makes much more noise than the old one ever did.

Is this in any way normal? I mean, right about now I'd trade my "rebuilt" tranny for what I had before in a heartbeat. And the throwout bearing is, for lack of a better word, unbearable.

try adjusting the clutch cable.if it has too much slack in it,when you press the clutch pedal in,it won't disengage the clutch when you go to shift gears.

That guy is giving u the biggest load of **** I have Ever heard....!!!

ASk him If back In 1994 when the car came out and the tranny was new If it was a normal occurrence for people to get stuck in third gear in the middle of the road because the car had to be broke in....

try the clutch cable

ddstang94 is right.assuming the cable is adjusted correctly,it should NOT grind going into any gear or get stuck in gear.make sure the cable's not stretched out, check the quadrent.do you still have the stock cable and plastic quadrent?may be time for an adjustable cable, aluminum quadrent, and firewall adjuster.

get under the car, remove the clutch fork cover and with your hand move the clutch fork to see how much play the fork has.there should not be alot.if there's alot, the clutch wont disengage.tighten up the slack.but dont tighten up too much.if you do,the throwout bearing will ride on the clutch, leading to premature failure of the throwout bearing.

if everything looks good but still grinds and gets stuck in gear,go back to the shop, tell the owner/manager the problem.let him know you asked around and that the grinding/getting stuck is not normal, and you are not happy about it.dont go angry or yelling around(even though we would all like to if that happened to us),be calm and ask them to look the car over again.

did the rebuild come with a warranty?if so,if they refuse or try to stonewall you.you could take it to another shop and have them test drive it.if it turns out to be a problem with the tranny mabye you could sue them for shoddy work:shrug: i'm not too sure about the legal end of things as i've never had to sue anyone.

my only point is to check the things you can,and it never hurts to talk to a person.good luck, and let us know how it turn's out.

If you put a new cable or fw adjuster in there, yourself, the shop will certainly blame those parts for the problem. If you are going to install those new parts, pay them to do it. That way they can't say that it was something that you did that caused the tranny to act up. Act like you are working with them to get it resolved. (Although, it won't be "acting". ;) )

This is exactly why I never could pay someone to work on my car. :(

I've talked to them, and had a few new developments. First, I mentioned the idea that the clutch may not be disengaging entirely. They told me that if that were the case it would likely grind in other gears besides just 4th, which makes sense. So I think the clutch is disengaging. I just wish I could figure out why the throwout bearing is making to much squeaking.

As for the tranny, the guy told me to bring it back in and they would tear it down and rebuild it again. But first he wanted me to do what he said he was going to do first, which was take it down a stretch of highway at around 35 mph and shift back and forth between 3rd and 4th. So tonight I did what he suggested...and 3rd gear is gone now. It will not go into 3rd at all, period. So its gunna have to be rebuilt again.

I also asked the guy about the noise the throwout bearing is making, and he said that was normal too (though it doesn't seem like it to me). He said the only way to make it quit making so much noise would be to add an extra spring, which would make the clutch harder to press down. I have no idea what that means, but does that sound right either? Thanks everyone so far for your help, I appreciate it a ton.

have the shop rebuild the tranny.if you don't have these already, now would be a good time for a new clutch cable, firewall adjuster, and aluminum quadrent.ask the shop to install them

throw-out bearing noise is not normal.i had my tranny rebuilt locally about three month's ago.i installed it myself with a new throw-out bearing and there was no noise at all.

when the tranny is ready, before you leave the shop,go for a test drive with owner/manager/or whoever did the rebuild.there should be NO grinding, noise ,or getting stuck in gear.also have them make sure the cable is adjusted properly.

good luck, and let us know what happen's.

one thing i had a problem with a while ago, after being in 5th for over 10 minutes it would lock into 5th gear and exiting the highway would be a problem.

i found out if i push the clutch in, put a little pressure on the shifter, then take the clutch back out again, then put it back in i can pull it out no problem.

i think my cables screwed up cause any hard shift into any gear pretty much grinds.

rebuilt astro performance t5 at home.
