I am taking the straight six out of my 1966 Mustang Coupe and putting a 289 in it. I realize I need to change out the Transmission as well. What transmission should I put in?

Well, it had an auto in it, so I guess I better go back with that.

What is the difference? Which is the benefit of one over the other?

I ran a auto and when I changed rear gears to deeper ones the aod was a blessing,it gave me overdrive for highway cruzing.

Why go with auto just because it had one in it? I mean, if you prefer ATX that is one thing...but to swap to MTX, the only real difference chasis-wise is one pedal(if reusing the ATX brake pedal, the pad does need cut down, but that is all) of course you would still need the transmission itself and all its associated parts, but just changing to a v8 from an I6 you have to change the throttle pedal assembly...whats one more pedal?

C4 will be the cheapest route and worked fine in lots o stuff for 20 yrs
AOD is more street friendly with its overdrive

Might consider a donor car if you need both the engine and trans.
