Tri-Ax might have shifted it's last shift!!

Has anybody recently bought or had an uninstalled T-5 Tri-ax? The reason I am asking is mine is two years old and recently I’ve been having and loud whine in 3rd and 4th. Well my rear main was leaking any ways so I pulled the tranni this weekend. The biggest thing I noticed was once the shifter was out the handle had NO spring or friction to it, AT ALL. I think I remember when I bought it, the shift handle almost couldn’t be moved until it was bolted down and leverage was working with you. Does any body know off hand if this is broken?
If it is broken it explains the whine in 3rd and 4th, what ever failed in the shifter is allowing the shifter to hit the stops and the tranni is over shifting and the gears are getting to close. So to me it makes sense that it is no good.

come on, somebody must know. I need to know if I have to buy my B&M ripper or not!!! The car is totally back togeater except the shifter!!!

(Mr.Obvious voice on) "No springs at all? Where'd they go? I have the UPR knockoff of the Tri-Ax and have had it on for over 2yrs now. Still has resistance from springs that center the stick. I would say it is toast and get another. Is there anyway for the springs to fall into the tranny? That would be very bad for the tranny." (Mr.Obvious voice off)

I'm not sure broken springs in the shifter would cause the vibration issue you describe. Do you still have your stock shifter? Bolt it up for a test run if you do.

If it is the shifter, consider going with a different brand next time. My MGW is STOUT.

i would not buy a b&m to replace it, have you checked out the MGW shifter yet.... no vibration, no noise, and unversally adjustable..... reasonably priced as well......

I don't have an answer to your problem. But I do have a tri-ax and have had it on my car for a while now. You know how you adjust the stop bols and the stick is supposed to touch the bolt a little when you shift it all the way... but it's not supposed to be resting? Well I've done a few clutches in my car... and probably took my shifter off about 4 or 5 times and now the bolts are adjusted all the way back (can't adjust them any tighter) and the bottom part of the stick rests on the bolts. I also get tons of crazy noises from the shifter it's self, and overall it feels like crap to me now. I never used to miss 3rd or anything... but I miss it all the time now... I thought this was the shifter people said was impossible to miss 3rd with? Maybee it just has too much wear and tear on the shifter it's self. Well, my friend had a pro5.0 in his car and man let me tell you that thing shifts like silk dude. If I get a chance i'm going with that and chucking the tri-ax.

So you took the shifter off and it feels loose. That is normal for a broken in shifter. Mine used to just slop around too. But try pusing it left to right that is where the spring action is. The whining is an internal thing with the transmission as it gets old, its not the shifter, but the shifter may amplify it somewhat.

i totally agree. i had a tri-ax in for a few months before i took it out and i swear my stock shifter is much better. the thing was basically impossible for me to get into third, hard to get into first and reverse, sounded horrible, and grinded in 3rd. i will never buy steeda products again after the problems i had with the tri-ax and my strut tower brace.

^^^ I have his old Tri-Ax. It works perfect. A million times better than the stock one. I don't have any "slop" in it, though. I guess it all depends if the adjustments are all good. And left to right is where I feel spring action. I don't hear whine at all, but my T-5 is new, with about 1,000 miles on it. I think it may be something internal for you ......

I have the B&M ripper, and have had it for a long time. I bang the gears constantly, and have had no problems. It never makes a sound, and I never miss third, or any gear for that matter .

I talked to Steeda and they said it is definitly bad. I can send it to them and they will fix it for free because tri-ax has a lifetime warranty. They say it could be causing the tranni noise because it only happens when I am on the gas, in the two gears (3 and 4) thet use the stops directly. So with out the spring tension the shifter was hitting the stops and over shifting the tranni?! what do you guys think?

Umm.... send it back & give it a try. I know anything like that is better than hearing your tranny is bad. Slap the stocker back on until they get it back to you.

They said it would only take a day or two to fix (+shipping). Even broken, the Tri-ax worked fine. I would not have know it was broken if I did not take it apart!! If they said 6 weeks then I might have gone and bought a B&M ripper pro. On that note, I'm thinking the ripper is a really good shifter. Every body that has one, has had it for a couple of years and loves it. Some people say don't get it because they have their own favorites but not because they have had a problem with B&M. I haven't heard any body having a problem with it!

get the MGW!!!!!!!!!!!!! you will never go back to anythng else again....i've driven 2 stangs with a pro5.0, one with a tri-ax, one with a hurst, and one with the b&m, and my MGW was by far the best.....

So send the shifter back in, get the new one (or rebuilt - whatever they give you), sell that one, and buy an MGW. After driving mine the last year, I honestly can't understand why people buy any other shifter anymore.

Got the Tri-ax back, all fixed. The tranni noise did not go away. I can't tell if it is coming from the tranni or rear end. I use the stock shifter handle because the steeda one is noisey. I think I am going to put the steeda handle on and when the car whinds it should be extra loud. This way I can narrow the noise down.

I use a pro 5.0 shifter and a tri ax handle never a problem actually its the best combo I have ever tried after years of racing I like it.

Tri-Ax might have shifted it's last shift!!
