I just talked to someone who installs Tri-Ax shifters, and he said that someone just recently took it out cause of loud noise in 3rd gear. Anyone hear it?

The Tri-Ax transmits noise and vibration from the transmission into the cabin.

Here is a company with a different approach. A friend ditched his Tri_ax for this shifter

It doesn't appear that he is making one for the '05 yet. I'm sure it's coming. Might be worth the wait.

I inquired about MGW's shifter, this is the response,

we are working on new designs for the 05 coming out soon. hopefully end of this month. the shifter is probably a good 8-12 weeks off though

Quite annoying

Yes, it's a really good shifter. It feels good, it’s precise and has a short throw. There are a few things you can do to help minimize the noise and vibration.

When I installed the Tri-Ax in my Cobra I used some gasket material between the shifter and the transmission. I purchased a square of the material from an auto parts store and cut the gasket to fit. A piece of this material can be installed between the shifter handle and the base. Use a shift knob that has some insulation. I was running a fat knob for a while. Liked the way it fit in my hand but it transmitted lot of vibration.

yes.. MGW is coming out with an 05 product rSN. But - I got tired of waiting. I too had more NVH but I discovered that my adjustment was just too darned close. Take off the rubber boot, open up the set screws another 1mm on both ends. Make sure you have 2mm slop between shifter and stop screw.

Next thing I did, while the whole thing was de-rubbered and the center console off (easier to put rubber boot on with console off - and it's only like 5 screws) was to dynamat the entire area around the shifter. For good measure I wrapped some dynamat around the shifter handle itself. Heck, it's buried under leather, who cares.

After those two things, my sound is almost at stock levels! Give it a whirl folks. I don't imagine the MGW shifter will be much different - after all, the transmission design calls for just this sort of solution (the triax is just like factory just different materials). The reason there is more noise is the same reason that it works better. Stiffer material, tighter integration - and in most cases, installation that's too close.

Good luck!
