Tribute to WW2 P51 Mustang

This is an idea I've been thinking about for a while. Here is a photoshop I made to represent an idea I have about turning my Cobra into a tribute to the WW2 fighter plane. I have not done anything to it yet and want to get some constructive feedback. This is NOT rice, it is intended to be a patriotic tribute to all of those who serve in our armed forces. The first pic is an elevated shot to show how the hood will be blacked out and the second is a side view. The third is an example of how P51 Mustangs were marked in WW2.
I might also put a "name" on the front fender above the wheel well. I'm thinking maybe TERMINATRIX or DREAM GIRL.

You know you'll be opening a can of worms with those kill flags on the fender there... although its an excellent idea for ricer kill record.

Yeah, I still need to find some German Cross decals. But, I'll only do a few on each side cause there really isn't enough room on the fender to represent every "kill".

The oddest part of this is. I have thought about doing just that more than once. I even started designing all the graphics. But I was going to use a more modern fighter look.

As for your graphics I have a few suggestions. First I would change it to be S then the star VT. As it is only 1 letter before the star on the P-51. But that is only if you are using that 1 particular plane. As for the rear numbers I think they are a bit too high. I would think they might look a little better more centered on the rear fender. And you could even use your best 1/4 mile time as the number. And I would definately put a name on it. Though the top of the fender might be easier. If you are not going to have it professionally installed.

Just do one flag of each and put it like this.

X 55

X 34

X 20

...of course you'd have to change the numbers on a regular basis.

The S VT will be as you say on the other side of the car. But, the driver's side needs to be like this to have the 2 letters in front of the stars and bars as they were on the real planes. The rear numbers are to represent the tail numbers, but, yes, it is only a rought draft and will be adjusted once I get the decals. The number on P51's were 6 digits so I added two zeros too 1577 which is the build number of my Cobra. Top of the fender is what I meant for where the name will be. I may include a drawing but that is only an idea. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm still debating if I should do anything on the rear of the car.

That's a more PC way of keeping track of your German kills. If you were to be historically accurate, you wouldn't be using a black cross...

In WW2 some had swastikas and some had crosses, so both are accurate, but I get what you are saying...

It's probably too difficult to do on your own. But those checker patterns seem to be on quite a few. For the rear. I would think youcould add the black tail stripes to your rear spoiler.

I will admit that while really nice cars get me pretty excited, seeing a P51, P38, or Spitfire in person is enough to make a mess in my pants. Its what every boy my age grew up building models of.

Its a cool idea.

Fortunately you dont have to soak some big sheet of decals in water and apply them just a *liiiittle* off kilter.

Seeing a P51 up close is one thing, but whatching and HEARING one do a close fly by just makes a mess!!!

Personally, I think that a tastefull tribute like this would be quite unique. I'm thinking that it might be slightly better placed on a non-Cobra, but it's commendable none the less.

I don't think that it would be long, however, before someone with an Acura would take that idea and run with it. You'll be at a stoplight one day, and he'll pull up beside you in his Japanese Zero, complete with a super-modified, 8 foot tall vertical wing on the back, some Ford and Chevy kill stickers on the fender, and one of those trailer-hitch props glued to his front bumper.

Don't go, though. His frustration in losing will no doubt result in his taking it to the next level, and he'll Kamikazee you at the next stoplight......

my father flew the P51 mustang in Germany, and I was under the impression that they were only used there and not in war with Japan?

I would try to get the checkered nose meshed into your design, and maybe make the decals a little smaller.

Mustangs were used in all theaters of WW2 in all versions. The original P-51A Mustang fought very early in the war against Japan operating from Port Moresby, New Guinea. P-51D's operating from Iwo Jima late in the war escorted B-29 bombers over Japan. They also operated in the Phillipines.

I was actually worried the stars and bars decal was too small. Since, if you look at the planes the emblem is quite large. I'm working on the checkered nose idea and will post an update soon.

Another thing to look at that'd be really cool is on the rudder how it's black with the yellow stripe and numbers, incorporate that into the rear of you car.

Well, I'm not trying to replicate any specific plane and using a black stripe vertically on the rear fender with a yellow stripe for the number would be a little too complicated, although an interesting thought.

Here is a checkered nose version utilizing a scheckered stripe available as a decal. The checkered squares can also be different colors like black and yellow or black and red or black and gray, etc.....

I like it...a lot. I had thought about doing something like that, but couldn't figure out how to make it look right. Its going to be tough though to transfer the classic markings of the plane to a car since the lines and scale are all so different.

By the way, has anyone tried to get their car photographed with a P51. There are a few that come to the local airshows, and I would love to see a shot of my ride with one of those in the background. Hell, I just dig stanging next and drooling over those old planes.

Tillamook Air Museum will on occasion allow the local Mustang club to be photographed with their P51D Mustang.
