reading directions says put the #1 pistion at top dead center.do i have to do this? if so how do i do this. i plan on putting the intake on this weekend so i want to gather as much information as possible...

Not 100% sure what that has to do with a intake install.

If all you are doing is a intake install you do not need the motor at TDC. You do want to make sure you get the distibutor rotated correct and marked before you tear it out.

Maybe they want you to get it to TDC to avoid any issues.

Pull the spark plugs out and turn the motor over make sure the timing pointer is pointing at TDC and look at the rotor in the dist and make sure it points at #1 wire.

you dont have to pull your spark plugs out. loosen the distributor cap and have the rotor point towards cylinder #1 on the cap. once close enough, just line up the timing marks to 0 on the balancer.
