Im thinking about getting this kit offered by Trick Flow.

Trick Flow 350 HP Twisted Wedge Top-End Engine Kit Ford 5.0L

My hp goal is 350hp so it looks like this kit works out perfectly.

Comments?

That kit will get you close to 300 at the feet (depending on your other mods) so it comes out to about 350 to the flywheel. TRE is a good company I bought my Trickflow R intake from them but also check summit as far as price.

My Trickflow TW set up was a GREAT kit. With the Track heat and 3.90 gears out back, it was perfect! I put down 290rwhp WITH cats on it (306). Now, dyno's are all subjective and I think the track is the best proof of power consistently but I was very pleased.

A few observations I've seen over the years

Many peeps have used that kit and have done quite well with it

I've seen rwhp results in the range of 285 to 315

Now ... You might ask yourself what makes the difference between em

Here is a short list

Long or mid runner intake
Quality of supporting mods
Catted or non catted mid pipe
Attention to details during assembly
Quality of tune
and
The one most often overlooked .......

Was the dyno pull calibrated with a STD or SAE cal :Word:

Bottom Line ... I think it is pretty good for OTS parts

The cam makes all the difference too. I had a ford racing B cam - emissions legal - basically. You should get a custom cam depending on your preferences. They always make more than off the shelf and can be customized to your preferences. If you want a smooth or lumpy idle, or more power mid-low- or top, etc..

If you like that, maybe buy mine. its more radical and will net you more power. I am putting in a new one.

I don't know which one scares me more-the fact that you can buy children

OR the fact that you ended up changing pieces on the one you bought...

I've done a ton of research on this kit and as far as top end kits go it seems to be the best around. trick flow also has a track-heat kit that gives you a bit more horsepower but also sacrifices some torque. I'm considering going with this kit myself. The horsepower goal would be no problem, especially if you get rid of the restrictive factory exhaust in favor of a set of headers an x-pipe and a cat-back system. oh and fyi summit charges more for the exact same kit, i know someone mentioned checking the price there. Good luck if you decide to do it!

I have had both and the track heat didn't give up ANY TQ but it revved way past 5k unlike the street ht that dropped dead at 5k ON THE MONEY. Track heat made the car pull hard to the red line like a 32 valve. I had 3.90's on the car at the time.

my brother had it in his 89 gt, he had the street heat w/ a stage 1 cam, ran like a raped ape and was his dd for awhile too until he sold it. very nice kit and the black is the best looking upper intake on the market IMHO

A bit of general info about upper intake choices

The rule of thumb is ..........
longer runners yield more torque down low but fall away sooner

Examples of these would be OEM Cobra, Edel Performer, TFS Street Heat

Now ... shorter runners are gonna shift the power band up
thus
Torque down low will be less
but
The upper part of the rpm range will be stronger

Of course ... Cam design goes hand in hand here

Never the less ... Upper intake choice should be considered :Word:

I don't wanna make this post turn out to be a novel
but
As always ... one's application is paramount in intake choice

I bring up this stuff since you have seen some here say .....
Use long runners and others say use shorter runners

Lets keep our focus on a street car that might see a bit of track time
Also ... we are talking NA only and sticking to the OEM block
Last thing is ... radical cams are out for drivabilitly reasons

So you can see why the TFS kit fits the application of many peeps

Now ... we come to the compromise in upper intake selection

What you may not know is .............
You don't have to go from one extreme to the other with your choice

Instead of going to the shortest runner intake
You can split the difference with a mid length runner intake

TFS makes a mid length runner upper which it the Track Heat
Edel makes one as well called the RPM, RPM II
Typhoon is a China Edel RPM knock off

As said above ... the shorter runner will hold the power longer
but
The lower part of the power band will be softer

The objective here is to NOT achieve a combo that has an OEM GT40
kinda power band ... Good power down low but peters out around 5K

You see ... with the TFS kit ... you got h/c/&i ALL working together

The heads AND the cam will ALLOW you to make power above 5K

Now ... ready for a couple more rules of thumb

1) LT's promote more low and mid range torque than shorty's
2) An aggressive spark curve will promote more low and mid range torque

So

One could utilize rule of thumb 1 & 2 to .......
Prop up the soft low end of a mid length runner upper
thus
Allowing one to have his cake AND eat it too

It needs to be said ... a tune is a MUST for one to be able to
take advantage of #2 from above :Word:

Whew ... Not Quite but Close to a novel
