desperate times call for desperate measures. i need money but when i get another intake i will get a TFS again but will be a track heat next time!!!

let me drop a few words of advice. I was in your boat. Looking to throw parts here and parts there. looking to spend about 3 grand on my car...well that price has since been thrown out the window. 1st thing... SET A BUDGET. from that budget see where you can go. THen with your budget find a setup thats going to work together. You can always try the Trickflow HCI combo or the Systemax setup. Not bad for the price and all go together. Its funny how 200 here and 300 there and 500 there adds up quick...next thing you know your in a few grand in parts that arent exactly right for your setup and there used. Another advantage of the cobra is that there seems to be more box uppers that will bolt up to the GT40 style lower. Seems more flexible for future plan changes to me.

if your gonna do a h c i do the tfs or the holley one everything is matched and you dont have to mismatch i made 275 hp and 308 lb ft tq to the wheels with the stuff in my sig and everyone tells me if i had teh street heat or the holley systemax intake i coulda been close to 300 the cobra isnt bad but remember its still just a stock ford piece

For the stock E7, ported E7 or stock GT40/Gt40P heads, a ported stock intake will work well as will a Cobra/Explorer. The Cobra/Explorer will give you room to grow past these heads if you think you will be doing a head upgrade later.

It's lower intake needs porting to supply 347 or larger strokers with heads that flow over ~230cfm.

if you want a supercharger i suggest getting the thumper/tmoss combo together with a b cam. For just a little over a 1000 bucks its the best bang for your buck. Plus it'll help make that supercharger a reality and not just a dream.

As to the original question, MM&FF did a test a couple of issues ago - and the GT40 intake (flow-wise nearly identical to the Cobra) held it's own against all the aftermarket units. So for your application, neither is likely to significantly outperform the other. As I recall the GT40 (think Cobra) had higher average numbers than the TrickFlow did. tmoss probably has a link or something.....

You're right Mike, but I didn't keep the link to the article. I pasted the article into Word and saved it that way. The Cobra peaked 10HP above the street heat AND made more average power/torque through the test rpm range.

:SNSign: Ok , first off when you plan on spending $3000 forget about it you will spend more if not 1 to 2K more. Beccause no matter what you plan on spending it will not work. Let me tell you why. When I first started by re-build I planed on $6000 well I spent $8000 but that is for motor, exhaust, trans, suspension etc... and all. What happens when you get started is this: "hey Pete did you know if you get this then you will need to get a new one of those that works with it?" Also I found my self saying "man, for the money I spent already why should I not spend $50 bucks more on this better peice for lets say, a throttle body. So I found my self buying the best of the best each time because it is a huge investment and you don't want to get the cheap stuff when you spend all this money, why not do it right, and like the other guy said it's not the big stuff that adds up because you know what that costs, it's the little thing $50 here $35 there $130 here that gets you in trouble. I purchased a fully polished upper and lower cobra intake $475 and no matter what anyone says it is a great intake. And I want to be able to prove to anyone that asks about my set up that this BITCH will still run in the low 12's even with the cobra intake! With some spray high 11's that was my goal! My advice again if you think you have a budget set forget about it! Because if you care at all about your car like I do you will see yourself in the same boat!!!

I agree that you will end up spending more then you plan....but there are things you can do to cut cost. Such things could be doing all the labor yourself, polishing your own intake, and if your main goal is reaching the 12s then looking at option like porting the stock heads and lower intake manifold. All of this can be done for much cheaper then buying all new parts. Even looking into the used parts market will save you money. You are right however about there being additional costs that you will not have planed for.

Yes sir this cost was all the labor done myself except the machining of the block and balancing of my rotating assembly. Not to mention huge savings through E-bay and various suppliers.
