Trouble replacing steering rack bushing

I'm trying to instal off-set bushings for my steering rack. I'm having trouble pulling the rack on the drivers side out far enough. Do I need to pull the shaft out? If so how? I'm afaid of damaging it.

He didn't encounter my problem. I'm unable to pull the drivers side out far enough to get the rear bushing out. I'm afraid to force it.

In the shop manual for replaceing the rack, says to remove a pinch bolt off the steering column. Then disconnect the steering column intermediate shaft coupling.
I was hoping to avoid that.

Any suggestions?

I'm done!!!

I had to remove the pinch bolt. After I installed the bushings I had trouble replacing the pinch bolt. After playing with it a while I realized that the wheels moved a little. I moved the wheels back and was able to slip the intermediate shaft on.

Now I can get an alignment.

i did mien w/o disconnecting the steering shaft. its tricky. i pulled the front bushing out, adn the inner sleve, then pryd the old bushign out the back, the new one i coated with poly grease, put it in place by hand, then pushed the rack into place - little hammer pursuasion and it slid right in. wasnt TOO easy, took a ltitle finness
