Trouble with new starter relay

I have run out of ideas as have my friends but recently replaced the starter relay on my 66 and when I went to start it, car started with no problems but the starter kept turning over while the car was running and only way I could get the car to shut off was pulling the battery cable. All the wires were verified connected right but now when I try and reconnect the battery it sparks indiciating a short somewhere and have no clue if its a short or maybe I got a bad starter relay from NPD. Any thoughts on what I should check on next?

I've had a run of bad starter solenoids lately...the AMK ones that most of the mail-order places sell have been giving me problems. A customer had the same problem you did, but didn't know how to kill the engine. It resulted in a small fire as his battery cables melted, and he blasted it with a fire extinguisher:

(BTW, did you mean you pulled the coil wire to kill it?)

If you're not going the concourse route, go to NAPA and get their premium solenoid. I've never had a problem with one.

On the car above, it took a new solenoid, battery cables and starter cable to make it run again. It then took a new voltage regulator and Pertronix unit to make it run right.

I had the same problem.It turned out that the key ignition switch was bad. The internals would stay in the crank position, even when the key was turned back to just the run position. A new ignition switch is relatively cheap. It only takes about half an hour to do(as a non mechanic ). If the starter continues to run after the engine starts, pull the two smaller wires of the solinoid. they just pull straight off, and they don't have 600 amps going through them.No tools necessary, and it's fast.
