trunk lid

Im thinking bout doing the same. Straight swap?

My convertible came with a new trunk lid on it. The previous owner found it easier to just get a new one and paint it. It has a 94-98 Mustang spoiler on it and from the looks of it, the trunk is the same as the coupe trunk.

They're the same size but they mount differently. You'll have to drill some new holes and fill the old ones to use a coupe lid.

The conversion of a notch trunk lid to a 'vert is fairly easy; just time consuming because you do not want to drill holes in the wrong location. Only 6ea holes have to be drilled to use the notch lid on factory 'vert hinges. 4ea are for the small sheetmetal screws & two larger holes for the studs.

I removed the old lid, used the thin rubber gasket from between the lid & the hinge as a template, carefully measured to verify hole locations, & drilled.
The trunk lock from the origional lid needs to be transferred to the replacement lid. It's actually going to be the biggest "pain" if you've never changed one out before. You will need to drill out the obvious aluminum pop rivet; inside the lid, right under the lock assembly, between the two little clear license plate light lenses. I'm sorry; I cannot describe removal step by step too you. I can tell you that if you look carefully; it is not too hard to figure out with patience, a pair of needle nose pliers, & a screwdriver or two. Good luck!

Another option, if you can't find a decent coupe lid, is www.blueovalindustries.com They sell a steel deck lid for $155. I paid $100 for a used coupe lid 5 years ago from a wrecking yard when I did my car.

Is it really that bad to just bondo in the small holes??? It just took me minutes to pull off the rack....used a small hammer to push the holes down and block sanded since the lid is very flat to start with plus half of them are under the spoiler anyway. Is it going to give me problems later on????

Not a good idea really if you think about it. You do not have anything under the bondo to support it\keep it from moving. You open & shut the trunk enough times; hit potholes on the road that jar the chassis\body....
If you're lucky; you will only see cracking around the outer edges of the bondo in the paint. Unlucky; the whole wad of bondo pops out along with the paint on top of it. kinda looks neat though; like someone shot your car many times in the trunk with a 44 magnum! (Yes, I've seen several lids done with bondo before)

Proper repair will cost more than just getting another "lid" unless you can weld, body work, & paint.
