Trying to add sound/power to my v6....help?

Hi,

I have a 2001 stock V6 mustang, and I'm getting kinda tired of the v6 engine sound. I'm checking into all the available options I have of being able to make it sound better (deeper and louder) and give it more horsepower (is this necessary for more sound?). I have really no knowledge of cars, so I don't really know what to look into. I've heard of many different options I have, including "headers", "dual exhaust", "flowmaster", etc. I'm not sure what kind of price, parts, and work is involved in these options.What is the most cost effective option out there including installation? And do these come with warranties?

I'd really appreciate any information...I wish I knew more about cars.

Hi, firstly I would recommend using the search function for this site. However here's some quick info for you:

don't worry about cams or headers right now...if you're looking for sound and hp i would recommend getting a dual exhaust straight flowing catback. For example Magnaflow. They give you good sound and some hp gains. A flowmaster is not a straight flowing catback so i wouldnt recommend them except for their sound. Secondly get a catted or depending on which state you live in, off road x pipe. They work well with the straight flow catback and give some hp and nice sound gains. If you follow this setup you will propably see anywhere from 10-15 hp gains as well as a much deeper and louder sounding car.

Alot of people, like myself, opt for just cat backs and no midpipe, or a custom one built by your shop of choice. I took it to a shop and had them install a kit I bought online (Magnaflows), and it cost me the price of the kit, plus the price of a Steeda V6 adapter (which isn't necessary, but it would have cost me about the same to have them custom fabricate something to replace the stock Y-pipe) and something like $60-100 labor. All in all it cost me a little less than $600, and sounds great, despite a lack of basically any other modification. However, alot of people can get cheaper prices. It just depends on what you go for.

Magnaflow is a brand, just like Mac and Flowmaster. I think your refference to a Mac setup basically means catback and midpipe that are made by the company Mac

Since you have an automatic, also give serious consideration to buying a flash tuner. They can really wake up automatics, and if (rather, make that when) you later decide to install 4.10s, you'll be ready for the speedometer recalibration.

What about a GT takeoff exhaust? Isnt this made to sound like a GT?

You wont get jack for HP with exhaust. Maby alittle tq. Power is exspencive. If you want power that bad change the gears in your rear end. You wont actualy have more hp but your car will defently go alot better.

Well, like said before, you really won't get w whole lot of power out of exhaust buyt you will get a better sound. GT take offs are cheap and they work, so you can't go wrong with that combo. BUT if you want good sound and good aftermarket quality then go with Borla, Bassanni, and Magnaflow. I personally don't care for the MAC exhaust sound. So, yeah. I'd go with a catback exhaust, then some pulleys, then a T-lok (gearing would be optional), then an intake or short shifter. Those are the "beginner" modds and should help you out a bit as far as speed,sound, etc.

Not more than $100 for the takeoffs and another $100 to have it installed/midpipe fabricated by a muffler shop.
