So I was going to install a Powertrax locker in my rearend with 31 spline axles, but when I went to slide in the axles, they dont fit. They wont slide into the carrier. Anybody ever seen this. I guess I have to get a 31 spline carrier now. I gutted out the old 28 spline stuff and I checked to make sure the powertrax fits over the new axles and it does. Its the carrier having a hole too small for the 31 spline axles to slide into. Should I just pull the whole carrier out and drop in an auburn locker or something. Is there anything I can do or does the current carrier have to go?

Ummmmm......lol...sorry. Ok yea your carrier has to match whatever spline axles your using. Sorry for the bad news. Youll need a 31 spline carrier. I vote the Auburn pro unit. Good luck

:rlaugh: sorry but I have to laugh also. Yes the spline count has to match in both pieces in order for them to fit together and mesh properly.
Its good to do a little research before buying parts.
Oh well live and learn. Hope you can exchange the carrier.

Has anyone seen the new unit from either Eaton or Auburn that is electro magnet locker. Its normally a limited slip then you flip a switch and it becomes a Locker unit. Kinda like a air locker but using electricity.

I think that a comany called ARB or something like that has had one out for a while. Its in been in the Summit catalog for a while now, but you also need to have aa air compressor in your car because it is activated by air.

I'm not going to buy anything crazy. I ordered the Auburn Pro. I just wish the places that sell these things would first tell the difference between the high performance and the pro. And also say what kind of power they can hold.

looking for a cheap fix? just go to a salvage yard and find a 31 spline unit from a truck or bronco. take it home and rebuild it. that will withstand alot of power and abuse. depending an how much power and abuse determines how often it will need to be reshimmed to tighten it up. but, there are alot of people running near the single digits with this differential. i'm sure there is better, but hey......

Let me explain again my dilemma because some people on here cant read. I obviously know the spline count has to match. My problem is that apparently there are different size races between the 28 spline carrier(outer shell that holds the clutch packs and spider gears) and the 31 spline carrier. The new 31 spline axles are slightly thicker, therefore making it impossible to even slide all the way in to come in contact with the 31 splines of the locker.

No crap, the spline count has to match. Im not stupid. I just said I pulled the 28 spline crap out!! Its the race that the axle slides into that is too small. It has nothing to do with the splines.
oops my bad. beat me with a stick. :bang: :stick:

i thought about the truck carrier but my car is at the hobby shop and I want to get it out of there as soon as I can. Sourcing a truck carrier and then getting a kit to rebuild it will take too much time. And it would be hard to find one cheap around here because the junk yards dont carry newer stuff, and if its one of those places that already has them pulled or I get it from a dealer its going to cost alot. Its not much more, quicker and easier to just buy the Auburn from Summit. Thanks though
