I just finished rebuild my 5.0. and I was wondering if i should have it tuned with a SCT chip? It is going to cost 500.00 for the chip, tune, and dyno. Does a chip really help a 1989 mustang. The only thing they can tune is the timing and fuel pressure. The engine is a 306 with a F303 cam and AFR 165 heads and Elderbrock Performer II.

I wouldn't waste your money on a tune for a motor thats all motor, especially if you plan on upgrading to more and more parts....once you get it tuned, and put on more new parts you should get it retuned....but if ur loaded and keep on keeping everything as it is then go for it.

I had a 302, systemax intake, comp cam, 24 lb inj, bbk short equal length headers, forged pistons.
I had some drivablility issues with surging and stalling. The motor really pulled over 3000 but felt weak under that. I spent the money for the chip and dyno tune. It drove and idled like new starting hp/tq was 90/75 @ 2000 with a peak of 246/256 @ 5500 rpm before the tune, had 225/190 @ 2000 rpm with a peak of 280/293 @ 5200 rpm. I would say if you are having same issues to do it. I just went back for a tune with the new turbo set up and cost me $200 for the dyno time since the chip was already there.
