My motor is coming out soon for a freshen-up and to replace the heads. I'm going with AFR 185's and my plans are to add a single turbo kit in the next year or two. Ultimate goal is for 500-550 at the wheels and MA smog legal. On top of that, it want drivability at near stock and the car to be fairly quiet. i am willing to sacrifice power for these goals.

my current cam is quite lumpy and designed for a supercharged car.

I want to replace the cam while the motor is out this winter. It was suggested to me by a VERY reputable mustang shop that the stock cam would be a decent choice, especially since i want emissions legal and driveability. i do have the stock cam that came out of my ~100k mile motor. if i remeber correctly, it has no unnatural wear and could go right back in.

what other off the shelf cams would achieve my goals? the motor may be NA for 2 years, but I do not want to change the cam again.

The stock cam although works well for turbo combos will not allow you to take advantage of the other components you have on your motor. Look into a F-303, emissions legal and it has been know to support over 900RWHP in some turbo combo's

Custom cam would still be my best choice however

+ 1 on the E or F 303 and the stock cam with 1.7's works well to.

I would personally shell out a few more dollars and get an FTI cam. I'm sure Ed can make something nice for you.

rick and superstang, I am thinking about a custom from either FTI or camshaft innovations, but wanted to see if there was an off the shelf that would get it done for a couple hundred dollars less. as I'm not looking for every last bit of power, I figured there would be something out there that could treat the setup justice and make the car enjoyable to drive.

anything else besides the E and F cams?

Thanks!

Ask the same question on turboforums.com and you'll get some good responses... There's a Crower cam that's supposed to be an excellent choice for a 302, but I'm a custom cam only kind of guy and I don't remember the number....I just remember it had a lot of 1s and 0s...ha.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I've had 2 different turbo combinations now, and I've paid attention to turbo cams. The general trend I see with the optimized turbo cams is a wider than n/a, blower/nitrous LSA with less overlap. Overlap at .050" is generally in the negatives on custom cams I've seen. Most of the turbo cams that were optimized ran in the 113-115 LSA range.

One nice characteristic you'll notice about these cams is a tendency to be extremely streetable with a smooth idle - barely noticeable - and excellent driveability.

Ed did a cam for my n/a 302 way back in the day and that car put out over 320 rwhp, but it was still impressively streetable. He has my respect, and is my go-to for cams. He'll build it your way and deliver what you're looking for, even if it isn't performance 1st.

Current Turbo setup: GT42R-76mm with an HP kit on a billet internaled 331 Dart block with AFR 205 heads and a TFS-R with a box upper intake. No numbers yet. Conservatively hoping to see 700 rwhp on pump @ 15psi or less, and over 1000rwhp maxed out (assuming I stay with a manual tranny).
