Turbo Question

In a couple of months I am starting a 5.0 build, is it better to do a turbo or a complete engine rebuild. And if turbo what will I need to do to the motor to get the most power out of the boost. Any help??

Dude im gonna tell you, turbos are cool but they are a pain in the a$$. We put a 347 with a 60mm turbo and intercooler in his 90 GT and still havent got all the bugs worked out. Some days she will run like a scalded dog then others it will spit and sputter. And the under hood temps are rediculous! After one min or so of running you can't do anything to it from the heat, nevermind the cramped space that they cause also.... IMO build you a nice stroker with a blower or small shot of N2O....... Just my .02

What about a super charger????? And if I did turbo would I have to drop compression or do any thing to the motor.

no if you want nice power use just a turbo. anything over 62mm will be enough to split your block. dont worry about a rebuild.

Honestly man, please don't take this the wrong way or anything, but building a power adder car isn't exactly something someone can just dive into. It does take a little know-how to understand what is going on with the system and how to work out all the little bugs.

I suggest really understanding these cars before committing to such a project.

What it mainly boils down to is how much moola you wanna spend. If I were you and had about $6000 to spend, id freshen up the short block with a 306 long rod kit or 331 stroker, a decent set of heads like gt40s, a intake to match and stick a S trim vortec on it. That will give you all the street oomff ull ever want. Of course you will need injectors, maf, and a good tune, etc.... well im probly over the 6g range if you do all new parts. But there are plenty of good used parts out there, I buy alot of used stuff and or trade.

if you want the most bang out of your car, do the turbo kit. will get you plenty to split the block. They can be a pain tho.

hellion turbo kit, 42lb injectors and find a shop that will give you a good dyno tune. Then beat on it till the stock stuff gives up....

then start looking for a dart block and your wallet

I really like the way you think. If I was to build another 400 rwhp-ish fox, I'd do it n/a, though. The twin-turbo had the oohs-and-ahs factor going for it, and I really learned a lot, but if I do it again I'm gonna keep it simple. Besides, people expect more from a turbo car than they do from an n/a motor. I think a 347 with AFR185s or 205s, and an RPM2 intake with a custom cam that made a hair over 400rwhp through my TKO would be a fun car.

mustang5l I have been around cars for a while now always played with chevy. saw a 5.0 and fell in love with it so thats when i decided to do this build and i got a couple of friends and a mechanic that drags so i am in good shape but i do appreciate the advice

thanks man i like the way i think too

but ya a motor around 400 rwhp is alot of fun... you pretty much layed out my combo, and i love the fact that my N/A motor will lay the smack down on alot of blower cars, and i have had WAY more satisfaction from this motor, runs cool, idles decent, and when i get the suspension dialed should run a high 10 sec pass...

But if i had a stock motor i'd just try and make as much power and have as much fun while it lasted... too many people get caught up trying to make 800-1000 hp(im guilty too, my motor is WAY overkill), but a 500 hp street car is fun as hell, and when built right and taken care of will last a long time
