Pick up this months copy of mustag & fast fords. They actually have an article about s/c & turbo on the s197. But summing it up for you the turbo could produce almost 600 hp to the wheels, s/c on safe tune and stock set up, I think was about 480 to the wheels. Turbo was harder to install. Look it up its a good bathroom read

Turbos do make more peak hp and they are quieter. The only down side is they take up more room. They put less stress on the rotating assy. Check out the Powerhouse turbo kit. It's priced right and is a quality set up.

Reliability is good with both blowers and turbos. That's not an issue at all. If you really want your torque peak way down low in the rpm range go with a twin screw blower. If you want an easy install with excellent power gains I'd suggest Procharger. You can't beat it's mid range and top end as far as blowers go.

turbo kits are expensive unless you are going to fab one up yourself. however, thats a lot of work. the blowers are easier to set up. you can see that is what im going with.

I've seen the Powerhouse system for a lot less. That price for the Procharger is for the basic system with the 2-core intercooler and lower boost. If you want to run the 3-core and more boost the price goes up due to fuel pumps, maf extender, etc. Hey, it's still a deal. Don't get me wrong.

What kind of numbers on a safe tune do u think the basic system makes? Also is there a problem with the procharger system and getting water in it or something??

Turbo's

Well I'm a turbo guy, turbos are free horsepower, supercharger run off a belt that robbs power as it makes it, they also put more stress on a crankshaft and the front main bearing. With that said on a stock s197 engine anything over 425rwhp is askin for trouble. either way you go, you will achieve your goals. Good luck

The basic turbo system will give you over 400 rwhp. I've had no problems at all with the Procharger set up. It's great and runs completely trouble free. I'm just not going to knock a turbo because I have a blower.

There is one thing with a turbo to consider though. After they have been run hard you need to let them cool down a bit before shutdown or they may seize up.

Looking at that link above, if you click on the link for the HO intercooled setup your looking at $4484 for a complete setup with 3-core intercooler........not too bad!

I'm going with the turbo setup on my s197 simply because I was so sick of BELT ISSUES that arose with S/C's on previous setups.

'a bit' and 'hard' are different depending on the turbo. does it have coolant fittings, how big is it, etc..

Most stock turbos (and turbo's that upgrade from the stock fittings) have a coolant line running through them these days, so waiting for them to cool off isn't really needed these days. In the WRX for example, there is a coolant resevior above the turbo so that even after the car is shut off, hot coolant boils up, cooler coolant comes in and replaces it.

With an aftermarket turbo, make sure it has coolant lines & taps into the coolant system. some of the larger ones, and some of the older ones are oil-cooled only. That would require a long cool down at idle, like several minutes. With a coolant system, get a turbo-timer and run it 20 seconds; no worries.
