UDPs and belt whine

Just installed Roush underdrive pulley and now I got belt whine. What could it be? Could the torque be off on the bolts or is it the belt?

If it's a "squeel", it's the belt. How many miles on the belt?

22,500 on the belt. Itsa getting a little better but still there above 2500 rpm.

Replace the belt first, then see (hear) what happens. I would bet the belt is becoming worn.

did you trim the stud, or replace it? if you trimmed it, there could be shavings that are causing noise. also, are you sure that the pulleys are fully seated? if its off a little, it could put a little pressure on the sides of the belt. just a few items to check into. also, did you use any penetrating oil, grease, anti seize, etc? may have gotten some somewhere yo did not mean to, and that is causing the noise.

Roush now sends a new bolt with the kit. No cutting! The noise sounds like it coming from the alternator or the water pump. Twice while running it hard on a test drive I got a check engine light and it felt like something gave out. Is the any reason I should reflash the tune or disconnect the battery? Just can figure this out.

Yea mine does the same thing, I thought it was a problem with the tune, but after talking to brenspeed, I found out it was because the crank pully was not torqued down to the propper specs( really long process). they told me that the engine is not really misfiring, so I just clear the cel whenever it comes up, no big deal.

Yup, but brent told me sometimes it works and sometimes you need new pullies. I didnt get into detail with him about it tho. as long as my car wasnt misfiring, I was cool.

Ok I really need help now. The whine is getting worse and the misfires continue. Could I have over tighten the balancer pulley or is it a bad pulley? Can the balancer cause misfires? Help my wife is trying to put a stop to my mods!

I got rid of my udp's for exactly this reason. They are not tuned well enough to dampen in the proper frequency ranges. Vibration will kill your engine.

Mine were Steeda. I had several "stumble on start ups" causing misfiring and unspent fuel out the tailpipe, and charging issues. That's when I called Steeda and asked them about different applications for the different 4.6L configurations (2V, 3V, 4V). They said, "nope, they're all the same and they're also used on the 5.4's."
The next day, they were off my car.
All of our damper may LOOK the same, but they are NOT the same. Each configuration of the 4.6L and 5.4L is unique in it's harmonic damping needs. There is no ONE damper that can satisfy the needs of all of these engines. The damping frequency ranges are quite different.
I hope that makes sense.

The Fix. I went to a smaller belt. Went to checker and got hooked up. The wine was coming from the pulley on the belt tensioner. Might call Roush and ask them to pay for the 2 factory belt that were destroyed.

How many pullies were in the kit and did you install them all? Your original post seems to suggest just one pulley was installed (you stated "pulley"). If that's the case, it only stands to reason that your belt would need to be replaced with a shorter one.
Just a thought.

2 pulleys. water pump (larger) and dampner (smaller). Still getting misfires. I may pull them off.

Yeah, some of these modulars are sensitive to this kind of thing. Many folks have no issues with them, but I did, and apparently you do too.

No problems with my Steeda pulleys. Very impressed with the quality. They're purdy compared to the rusty OEM balancer that I pulled off.

Spyder shaft comes next.....
