UFC 82

I think silva was booed because it was columbus ohio and rich franklin is an ohio native.
On their second meeting, I agree that was most certainly a factor. But on their first meeting where Silva faced and beat Franklin for the title initially, they were in Vegas and the crowd reaction was no different.

So if Serra were Canadian and GSP were the American they’d still boo him? Yeah, sure,OK, I’m buying it.

Silliness.
No, probably not....but there's a good chance if GSP were an American, on Canadian soil that carried on with the positive and respectful attitude he has, he wouldn't be met with near the hostility either. Your mistake is that you look at these fighters with their nationality as the main focal point. You have to see them for the kind of champions they are, not the country the represent. I mean, if you want to compare champions based on their Nationality, Rich Franklin was an excellent champion, who really does his country proud. Not only with his skill and dominance as a fighter, but with his positive attitude and humble win/lose demeanor. I was sorry to see him beaten by Silva, but was pleasantly relieved to see that Silva was another fighter who carried that same level of integrity and mutual respect for his opponents......which is I'm sure why Anderson Silva paid homage to him after his fight with Henderson. Then you get a clown like Tito Ortiz that thinks of no one but himself and show’s little to no respect for anyone’s accomplishments or abilities as a fighter. He’s not nearly as good as he thinks he is and still fails to realize he peeked about 3 or 4-years ago and has been going down hill since then. Guys like that are poison to the sport and need to be replaced sooner, than later.

So getting aback to the topic at hand, buy it...don't buy it, but don't try to convince me that Nationality it isn’t a factor from standpoint of the majority of American based fans. Almost every, single non-American fighter that's beaten an American champion has been met with hostility and/or unfounded boo's from the American fans.....Period! Show me some stock footage from any title event that proves otherwise and I’ll consider things from your perspective. Regardless, you certainly don't see the Asian, European or Canadian fans act that way for the most part.

Hating seems too strong a word, but disrespecting or to a greater extent disregarding non-American fighters just seems to be the mind set the majority of US fans seem to be have where MMA is concerned, IMO. They’re almost “Proud to a fault”, I’d say?

While I agree w/ you Banger it also goes the other way. Fighters like Cro Cop were meant to come in and clean up the division and were welcomed with open arms when he stepped into the octagon. I still think if you put Cro Cop VS Tim Sylvia you would have more pulling for Cro Cop, hell I would be and Tim's from Maine. But it also falls back on what you said, Fighters like Cro Cop are not cocky fighters.

To be honest, I really don't know anyone who likes Tim Sylivia....and don't recall every seeing him greeted with praise from any of the fans. :D He's not really a great champion IMO. Not as brash, or cocky as some of the others I've seen, but still not a great representative of what an ideal champion should depict. I agree with you though, the division is kind of a mess. It's too bad Cro Cop walked away from the UFC after such a short time though. He had a bight future had he stuck it out a little longer. :(

Gear,

By your own admission he wouldn’t get booed if he were a Canadian but will as an American means he’s getting booed for more than just his attitude.

This phenomenon of booing a foreign team or athlete is by no means new or strictly an American thing. I’ve seen this happen in Mexico the U.K, Canada just to name a few. Hell, I’ve seen something probably more egregious, the booing of a countries national anthem. To imply that this type of behavior is uniquely American is just flat wrong.

Do you not remember the U.S. Junior hockey team getting practically heckled out of your country to a chorus of boos and chants of “U.S.A SUCKS”?

Glass houses.

I admit no such thing. The local fighter is almost always going to get praise over the competitor, regardless of his attitude. So if Serra were a Canadian, he'd have the "home town hero" thing working for him. The difference is, is that the competitor, regardless of where he's from is going to generally be received based on the type of fighter he is.....not based on his geographical location on the map!

Ahhh...now Hockey is a whole different story. Canadian's take thier hockey as seriously as American's take their Football. And we all know how crazy those types of fans can be. I make no excuses for them what so ever....Canadian Hockey games attract as many red necks as NASCAR! :D

Well since it’s narrowed to MMA and specifically UFC and this is Canada’s 1st event, then obviously you haven't had the opportunity to be homers.

But

This isn’t a trait the U.S. holds alone and if Canadian Hockey fans can display this type of behavior and worse, there’s no reason to believe Canadian MMA fans are immune.

BTW
GSP is very popular in the U.S. and I’ve seen him get much larger positive reactions than his American opponent.
Koscheck vs GSP comes to mind.

Hendo and Silva was a good fight. I would have liked to send Henderson take the fight deeper and really test Silva. I think he was capable.

I think Arloski belonged on the undercard. His recent fights have been lackluster at best.

Cro Cop will be back in the UFC. I've read several places where he wants to fight another place an get back on his feet and back to his winning ways. After he is comfortable again and has his confidence back he wants to return to the UFC and fight again.
