well i came home from school this weekend and was just out driving the car....turned onto a 3 lane highway and let it rip....and in the high RPMS at full or near full throttle its starting to blow smoke...quite a bit by my standards....now im a perfect world id grab a forged 331 shortblock from somehwere....but im currently in school, jobless for now since apparently nobody in my area wants someone to work just weekends....so whatever cash i had saved up until this point(which is not much) is what im working with....i need a cost effective buy quality solution....man i ust have the bastard 5.0...lots of guys running strong with 150k plus...and im here blowing smoke at 69k!

Pull the heads and check the valve seals. It could be them. I wouldn't go rebuilding anything without finding out why I need to rebuild it first.

If your short on cash, pull the block out and take all the internals out. Check the walls and if you can still see the hatch marks. I'd get some kind of Probe piston with the standard 4.000 bore and upgrade all the rod bolts with ARP. With new bearings, rings, pistons, and fastners, you are looking at less than 600 (or so) bucks. If you have access to good mics and feeler gauges, I'd be a breeze putting it back together if someone specifies clearances.

yeah i guess i should do a compression test....when i pull the heads, what should i be looking for??....maybe it will turn out to be something "basic" like seals or such....if its piston rings or something i guess thats a good excuse for some forged pistons....

What color was the smoke? If it was white it sounds like a blown head gasket or even an intake gasket. If so, it'll cost less than $200 to fix it with gaskets, oil, coolant and bolts :)

If its blue smoke, then thats oil. Is it doing it as you drive or get on it? If so, thats bad rings.

had a similar prob......took a afternoon and threw a set of valve seals in it......after about 20 mile prob went away comkpletly.....dont know that will fix your prob but is a cheap check

so how will i tell if the valve seals are bad??...also, what does it sound like the problem is to you guys....zero smoke at part throttle....smokes in higher rpms at full throttle....also when i got home...there was a very small tail of smoke coming from the left tail pipe.....btw the smoked looked blue to me through the rear view....but it COULD have been white...
