underdrive pulley kit question

Yes, the Steeda set has a new crankshaft pulley/balancer that is SFI certified. i.e. the real deal. I had no cooling issues (nor know of anyone that has) and no real charging issues. Only thing is that the lights will dim and the needle will move a little when at idle, in gear, with the AC on, lights on, and radio blaring, but no actual charging issues. In other words, no, no issues.

I have a set of lightly used Steeda pulleys for the 96-early 01 GTs that I'm looking to get rid of. PM me if you're interested.

Steeda. 8 years. No issues. More noticeable than TB plenum combo. Better mpg too.

Pulleys pay for themselves in gas. For me they are a no-brainer mod if you are going to stay NA.:nice: Worth a tenth at the track too.

8 years and no problems is pretty evident. thanks for the info. still considering doing a tb/plenum if i can snag one cheap off ebay and add a set of pulleys as well. also throw in a cheap cai kit. would love a jlt but sheesh, the price.

how bad are the steeda's to install? not too bad?

I paid 50 bucks to get my pulleys installed. You need a tool that I didnt have.

BTW. Mr Raburn has a K&N cold air kit on clearance that you might want to consider. K&N Cold Air Kit 96-04 4.6 57-2519-3 $150. See the thread at the top of the tech forum.

ill check it out. thanks :nice:

with the tool from auto zone / equivalent it is not too bad. You still might spend some time looking around and double checking everything - thus it takes a little longer. But really, I would do it myself.

Im getting rid of my UD pulleys. They cause problems if you DD car with everyday things on. Like GPS Charger+Radar detector+Radio. Soon as you hit a red light your idle drops down real low and the battery doesn't charge correctly.

Matter of fact i just hand bucket washed my car with the car running so i could keep warm in 20 degrees weasther. Accidentally left the heater blower on with the motor off for about 5 minutes.

Tried to start the car and the battery was dead @ the car wash. :( :rlaugh:

The fact the car running @ idle for 15 minute while hand washing the car with the under drive pulleys pulled the battery down pretty low. Then once i turned off the car but left the blower running on a already low battery killed it. If i wouldve had regular pulleys the battery would be charging while sitting @ idle.. unlike the UD pulley where it charges while driving only.

LOL. They cause more problems than good for SOME people.

trust me.. i know this was a user error, still Reg. pulleys wouldn't had this problem

its either gonna be steeda or march brand. both have the sfi balancers. cheapest i can find new is $190 shipped on the steeda pulleys.

with these next few mods the sum of the list will be as follows...

pypes o/r x pipe
mac catback
cold air w/spectre filter
ford racing 70mm tb ported/polished
oem plenum heavily ported/polished
steeda ud pulleys
diablosport

h&r ss springs
replacement shocks/struts
18" fr500's (about to be changed)
295s & 265s

Thats not normal at all. How old is your battery? Is your alternator ok?

I had the same thing happen....except with my stock pulleys.....turned out to be a bad battery. It was only 7 years old....

I watched an entire 2 hour long drive-in movie in the winter with my car idling, with my Steeda underdrives, and had no problems. Keep in mind, this was with the Mach 460 sound system and my two 12 inch subs (400 watt RMS) turned up pretty loudly.

In the 6 months I had them on my car, I never had a single issue with them. Yes, the needle will dip to the low side just a bit if you are idling, lights on, AC on, in gear, and the radio blaring, but I (and countless others out there) never saw any negative effects from that.

Also, are you talking about your old 4.6? Or your 5.0? I have heard that UDPs can cause charging issues on the 5.0s, but I've never heard of such issues on 4.6s.
