What are the devices and plugs located on the passenger side between the firewall and the strut mount near the fender? They are bolted into the sheetmetal and I don't know what it is and would love to rip it out! Also, I have removed the cruise control from behind the driver's fender. What is behind the passenger's fender that can come out? I noticed some vaccuum lines going in there but I think they are for my charcoal canister and from what I understand, that should stay. Thanks!

Do the "devices" your talking about have vac lines going to them?

Sounds like it is the EGR solenoid valve and the solenoid valves for the smog pump valves. Unless you are planning on going EGRless or ditching the smog stuff you need to keep those solenoids. You might want to see about relocating them into the fender well and extending the vacuum lines and rerouting the wiring if you want to clean it up some.

Well, I don't have a smog pump and I thought I was EGRless already, but this is my first Mustang and I don't really know what's what yet so I will figure it out this evening. THanks.

Do you know what mods have been made to the motor?

IMHO, there really aren't any benefits for a street car to be EGRless. I ran a GT40 intake w/o EGR and I couldn't advance my timing past 10 degrees and sometimes still had some issues with detonation. You can also run into issues with the CE light coming on because the computer doesn't see the change in EGR position. If you have no smog pump you should be able to remove the two smaller solenoids, I believe that there are three over there. The larger one is the EGR solenoid.

Does the car still have the EGR valve in place or has it been taken off and blanked off?

If you are EGR less and want to stay that way then yes you can take that stuff out. Just make sure to plug off the vacuum lines to prevent leaks. And save the solenoids incase you ever decide to return to an EGR set up. I am glad that I did.

The motor is a 347 stroker with a 75mm TB and a Cobra intake. I am having the intake matched to the TB and the rest ported out this weekend. It also has TF TW heads, Crane cam, etc etc. It runs great! However, there is a solenoid under my hot air induction filter that looks plugged into the canister, but there are no vaccuum lines attached to the two ports on it (T). I don't know what that is. Another thing I don't know what it is is the big goldish solenoid sticking off the TB area of the intake manifold pointing sort of backwards. Is this my EGR valve? It has a vac line going from it to a little 5 line connector coming from the fender/firewall area (didn't look that hard). That connector also has a line coming from the intake manifold to it as well. The other 3 or so ports are capped. What does that thing go to? If I remove all of this crap, will a tune be able to turn the CEL off? Thanks.

Yeah the big goldish thing sticking off the back of the TB area is the EGR valve. Since you have a Cobra intake it should bolt right up to the intake right by where the TB mounts. If you trace the hoses out the hose that comes off of the EGR valve out it should go to that connector and if you trace it through the connector it should hook up to one of the solenoid valves. The other vacuum hose that comes directly off the intake is the one that supplies the vacuum to one side of all of the solenoid valves.

If you have it tuned or have a chip burned for it you can have them turn the EGR function off and it will take care of the check engine light.

The solenoid that you are talking about down by the charcoal canister sounds like the canister purge valve. Are there any hoses connected to the charcoal canister? It should have one from the fuel tank and then one that goes to a port on the under side of the upper intake. In that line from the canister to the upper there is a small solenoid valve that allows the fumes from the charcoal canister to be sucked into the intake and burned in the engine vs. being released into the air. Sounds like the hoses that go from the canister to the intake are gone. Mine were dry rotted and I just ditched the whole canister and all the associated stuff.

I'd love to ditch the canister and solenoids etc. What can I get rid of without tripping the CEL? I will remove the rest when I get burned. Also, what about the gas fumes people experience when they remove the canister?

I really haven't noticed any fumes but my car has no cats on it so i can't really tell when I drive it anyway and I haven't smelled any fumes when it is sitting in my driveway.

With out triggering a CEL you can disconnect the cannister and its stuff and the two solenoids for the smog pump stuff. They should control two valves on the piping that goes down to the H pipe and the valve that feeds air to the crossover tube at the back of the heads. More than likely this stuff has already been removed from your car. If you pull codes you will see the codes in the computer but they will not trigger a CEL. In my experience out of all of those things only the EGR will trip the CEL.

I originally came across that diagram from Tim (Stang22) - I am just a messenger.

It is a great diagram and has saved me lots of typing (that no one would be able to follow anyhow).
