Everything is so expensive

It's like my computer all over again, except even more expensive.

Both are very rewarding though

Now that's pretty! There's my eventual engine right there.

If you can afford it, the coyote is the way to go. Why spend $5-7k for a stock block 302 stroker that may make 450hp and be pretty much maxed out naturally aspirated? For the same money, you can do a stock coyote and make the same power. Better mpg, smoother, stronger block, room to grow, and broader power band.

Replace p/s rack, get a couple cans of cleaner and clean the crap out of the engine bay or even possibly repaint the engine bay while the motor is out.

My motor and trans is out right now, i'm going to tuck a few wires and do some smoothing

Ok so assuming I don't need any kind of bore to the engine I will get this rebuild kit:

Part # FEM-MHP174-000 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fem-mhp174-000

What kind of timing chain & gear should I get along with replacement lifters? These are not included in the rebuild kit that I am guessing I have to replace. I searched for Oil Pump Driveshaft and none were available for a 302. Anything else that I should replace?

Sorry if this belongs in the Tech section due to technical specifics.

The motor alone is $6k. The control pack another $1500 Add in K Member, headers, and all the other parts needed and you are looking near $10k easy. Most build I see are near $15k when all is said and done.

Feh,... Don't like that kit one bit. You do not want a multiple piece pan cork pan gasket, cork vc gaskets. You want the bearings to match your crank. What heads and cam are you running as that dictates the pistions and rings. If you are going to go budget bargain basement, get a used explorer short block for $200, throw some new gaskets, a new ARP oil pump shaft, melling high volume oil pump, and some decent FelPro gaskets in it and go on your way.

Im going to run the stock (E7 i think?) heads. The FelPro Gasket kit is $70 and I would like to get that rather than the "high-performance no name brand" gaskets this kit comes with. What cam would you guys recommend for the stock heads? I'd really like to keep this engine relatively stock. I'm not that much of a performance junky and its just a daily driver. I'll more than likely get a hatch and modify that in the very far future.

The guy who is rebuilding my engine is going to port my intake I believe. He is also sending the heads and block to the machine shop to get milled and cooked. He has multiple trophies for car shows/track events and builds multiple engines a week so I have a lot of trust in this guy. He estimated labor to be $400 - $500, machine shop will be around $500 and then the other $500 I have is for rebuild parts.

Hell my exhaust is all stock too. That's the only thing I can't stand to be stock. The used mufflers I had weren't the right offset so that was $40 down the drain. I bought them 2 months ago though.

At the risk of totally ticking you off, might I suggest you get a junkyard Explorer motor, change the cam to a stock 5.0 HO. change the springs, put a new oil pump and hardened shaft, new water pump, new gaskets, and for 5-600 total you will have a motor that makes more power than your stock mustang motor.

It is your money but I don't see the reason to rebuild a completely stock motor unless it is for a specific reason. $1500 for a STOCK rebuilt motor? What machine work- line hone? Deck milling? balancing of crank, rods, pistons? Magnafluxing of all parts? Boring the cylinders? installing cam and freeze plugs? Degreeing cam? For $500 in parts you are going to to get cheap chinese made crap. It won't cost you any more to build a 306 that has some more power. You can buy preassembled GT40 heads for 3-400 that are ready to bolt on.

Before you do anything, give Mark Oneal a call @ CHP.

Unless you need to degree the cam, a TRW double roller set is going to serve you well. As will your Fel Pro head gaskets.

Send me a message if you want a pair of ported E7 heads with valves and springs. They are coated in an antirust spray and I have no clue how many miles are on them. They came extra with my car (that was in some stock appearing class I guess) and you can pick them up for NADA before I go to the scrap yard. Looking at Ebay, I do not see most folks think E7's are worth the shipping unless they are rebuilt.

You will not tick me off lol. I am here to learn and get outside opinions. What use would it be to post something and be bull headed to others?

If I do a 351w from a junkyard I am worried it would be worst than my current 302. I'm also worried about hood clearance, mounting, and exhaust. I would do GT40 heads but there aren't that many parts available around here besides a bunch of body panels.

I guess you could say I'm still wary of the unknown and that's why my idea was just to rebuild It stock. If I can get an awesome deal and eliminate the $500 machine shop then I will have $1k for parts and the rest labor.

I'll send a pm about the E7 heads and see what kind of deal I get. And where do I get the number for Mark O'Neal at CHP?

I parked my fox until I get the engine done. The way it's running is making me worry so I'll drive the family firebird which I hate lol. I would like to start on the engine by the end of May.

I am not sure what all the machine ship will do. He just gave me an estimate real quick.

Thanks to all you guys helping me out. I really appreciate it
