Used gears??

I been thinking about getting some gears and I have seen some used gears for good prices. I was wondering if anyone has ever bought used gears and had any problems with them. Also what could you look for to tell if there in good shape?

I've always been advised to avoid used gears. The wear pattern from the previous car can cause the gears to howl in your car. It's a good question and I'm curious to see some more responses.

no problems with used gears here, just ensure you by ford namebrand gears only. as long as the gears are not cracked or chipped their should be no problems gears howl because there installed wrong.

Ive always heard to stay away from them too.

I got my gears, install kit, trac loc rebuilt for like $330 from www.buyfordracing.com if it helps.

I installed a set of gears in our Mustang that I ran for a couple of years in my F150 and have no howling or whining with them, they only had about 10k miles on them and they are Ford gears.

One way to tell if gears are good is to run your finger across the leading edge of one of the teeth. If it "cuts" you, they're no good. If it is "rounded-off" they are prolly ok. Not a hard/fast rule, but good to know if you are buying from a JY or sawp meet.

FYI--Some Explorer Sport Trac's (ugly as they are!) came with 4.10 gears. So, if you see one in a JY, check the tag on the diff cover.

I wouldn't do it, anyone that doesn't have a whine after is just plain lucky, it's almost impossible to setup used gears in a different case perfectly.

I installed used gears before and did not have any problems. It all comes down to how well they were installed before and the wear pattern on them. Gears can be bought pretty cheap so unless you find some used ones for dirt cheap then Id just buy new ones.

I basically put in used gears... the guy that did my install didn't get the right torque on the pinion bearings and they got shot and I drove about a 1k miles on them, had him rebuild it, still not right, another 1k miles later (when the sound was getting bad again) my bud and I got the right torque on the pinion bearings and in the last 28k miles the sound has gotten better....

So while it may seem worth it to save the $$ I would still buy new gears... I went 20k miles not trusting my rear end due to the noise/vibration....

If you need to save $ I think the 4.10s are cheaper than 3.73s....

Just gotta be smart when purchasing used gears. I've been running them for 4 years now with no probs.

I agree. It's either a hit or miss sorta thing.

i had used gears with no problems... just like stated above make sure to look at the wear patterns and make sure everything doesnt look like its been rubbed the wrong way. if it passes that test, make sure whoever installs them knows what they are doing or they will whine

I found a set and the guy says they were only used for 100 miles. I know the guys that are putting them in do good work because they put the gears in my brothers 4x4 truck in the front and back and he hasnt had any problems plus that pretty much all they do in there shop. I cant decide if I want to get them that I found though.

Mine are Ford and had about 2k miles on them when they were installed in my car. I have no whine for about 2 years now. Installer is the biggest part with good used gears. Make sure they are in good shape.

since most of the $ is install labor, how much are you really saving? im not sure if the cost savings would out weigh the risk of having whine/howl or having to get more.
