Vacuum Leak

I read in a Mustang Tuning book that it is not safe to use carburator/TB cleaner to check for a vacuum leak. Is there any truth to that or is there something else better I can use to check besides taking it in to a shop.

You do run the risk of catching something on fire but if you pay close attention(less than 1%) to what you're doing you should be ok. It is a very effective way to find vacume leaks. I've been diong it like that for years with no problem. Make sure your ignition system is sound before doing so.

Yes, especially your ignition wires. You don't want to be spraying flamable liquid with arching plug wires.

mix a 50/50 solution of water and rubbing alcohol

I always use starting fluid. It works fine. The idle goes up a lil when you go over a vacuum leak.

Either the 50/50 water alcohol or starter fluid, how would I use that to test for a vacuum leak?

The Starting fluid, you can spray it all around the intake and if the idle jumps, you have a leak where you sprayed it.

believe me though if you ahve frpp wires and they are at least 6 months old you may not want to do that

Thanks for the warning...I am pretty sure I do not want to find out the hard way. I will try the starter fluid. I guess I can pick that up at any auto shop, right?
