Hey all,

Just wondering if there are some speed displays (not sure what the official name is) that are operating on a band not known to most radar detectors? Those things cops put on a road to display your speed on a large display normally operating on Kband.

Just drove by one tonight down my street and I did not hear or see a signal from my Valantine one. So I turned around and went past it one more time making sure it really was reading my speed...it was.

The only argument I could think of is that it was using laser and it was really foggy out making it difficult for my detector to read?

My Valantine has paid for itself 100 times over, but I'm really scared now if there is something it can not detect.

If there is a new band, which I don't know about, then V1 will update their system soon and you can send yours in for a new program...I should get one but have not yet.

So is the V1 programable? I think I'm going to go back up the street tonight and check it again.

Ok...maybe I should run spell check first. It's Valentine One.

I'm thinking this might be the problem; if it really was a lidar.

From http://www.valentine1.com/laserhowto/ :
The pencil-thin beam of the laser gun expands with distance. The actual beam is only several feet wide at 500 feet, but "aiming wobble" introduced by the human holding the bulky gun make the detectable beam at least three times larger. Even without the wobble, it covers most of the roadway after a mile. This means it is actually much easier to find a fragment of the beam at greater distances from the laser trap. At short ranges, the beam may be so concentrated that a detector mounted away from the aim point on the vehicle may not be able to pick up enough stray energy to activate an alarm.

Ran my serial number off my Valentine on their site and it has the most current version:

V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.8. This is our latest and best performer on both radar and laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: You have our best.

tfritz, not to change the subject or anything but do you have any sound clips of your exhaust? I have an 01 Cobra as well and I'd really like to hear what the Bassani X and Bassani Catback sound like. Thanks.

I don't have any sound clips but I can easily use my fathers camera that takes video with sound. I'll PM you when I get it. I'll be over his house sometime this week.

Went past that damn radar speed sign this morning and my detector still didn't go off.

So how much better is a "v1" verses atop of the line cobra or passport or whistler? I saw an add for the valentine and saw it shows which direction it is coming from, but looked bulky and 80's style so i judged a book by its cover and went with a different one.

Not that is matters around here...police chief must of put out a memo that unless they are parked running a speed trap to turn them off because all of a sudden the cops around here are all silent when i pass them.....passed about 5 one day in a matter of minutes on our main street around here and not a one was shooting...scary

My passport is picking up everything. I even pickup the laser surveying crews use.

I would agree my passport picks up everything! Also make sure that nothing is blocking its view. The v1 should even work with ladiar if it is pointing at your car.

I got the same thing with my V1. A construction section of the road that has a speed display. Most days my V1 pick up both my lane and the other lane when I pass that. The other day( A Sunday no one working), I picked up nothing both lanes. When I returned later, same thing nothing, even though it pegged my MPH. So I have seen this also with a V1 on speed displays. I also checked the V1 site and i got the latest.
Last 5 times though it , my V1 picks it up no problem. Why that one time, who knows.

Sounds like it may be that new POP technology by MPH Technologies that Valentine discusses on his website. It puts out such a short burst of intensity that no detector (yet) can pick it up. Now, the accuracy (and thus the legality) is currently in question so perhaps they are using them on speed display devices to try and intimidate the high end detector owners. Try looking on Valentine's website and read up on it.
I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. The main thing is to accept ANY radar detectors limitations and use your eyes and common sense with a good detector being the back up.

Found it. Interesting read too: http://www.valentine1.com/pop/

Maybe it was POP that was hitting me.
Oh well, my V1 has been right on everytime. All the CHP use Ka band and local city cops use k band...and it's been right ALL the time.
It doesn't pick up too much noise...there is a logic setting on the V1 that helps filter that stuff out for you.

There is also a POP simulator that shows how wrong it is: I got POP'd from a mile away at 20 MPH and the officer read 134 MPH! That's pretty inaccurate.

Have you reprogrammed your v1? That speed thing may be using 'k' band. I know that none of the cops around here use 'k' band so I reprogrammed my v1 to not even search for it. When you first plug in your v1 or start your car a "p" will appear in the display if it has been reprogrammed.

To who ever said the v1 was bulky I agree in the pictures it always looks huge and thick. In truth it is not much larger than any other detector. And the web site is right,'once you have the arrows you will never want to go back.
