Just like the title says. I just picked up some valvoline HP gear oil and it says nothing specific about if friction modifier is needed or not, but it kinda sounds like it is OK without additional friction modifier as it says on the bottle that it is good for limited slips...

Should I pick up some friction modifier as well?

Thanks.

yes the friction modifier is made specifically for the rear diffs in our cars. plus its only like 4 bucks from the ford dealer. but i would pick it up and put it in.

NO.

Friction modifier is what allows the clutches in your traction-lok differential to slip while turning. Extra friction modifier makes the clutches slip more easisly, ie when you are accelerating hard from a stop, creating one wheel peel.

I would contact the maker of the product and ask them. Shawn is correct about how it all works - that is why some auto X guys dont use the modifier at all - the clutches lock tight, but chatter a good bit.

Good luck.

Some fluids come with the friction modifier specifically in it (Redline does this, as I recall) - does yours have it included already?

If one hears chatter, it should be easy enough to syphon a little fluid out and add some modifier - it is a small bottle (what, 4 oz maybe?).

Good luck.

I contacted Valvoline yesterday morngn and they replied late yesterday (pretty quick). They guy said the HP gear oil already has the friction modifier in it. Not bad since it is only $1 more a quart than the NAPA gear oil that does not have the additive.

Thanks Guys.
