Vent Window Weatherstripping

I've searched/read the archives before posting...I just changed out one side of my '67. It is different from the '65-'66 in that on piece surrounds all 3 sides of the glass. Question: should I have used a sealer in the channel before installing the new seal? Also, the job was much easier than described in the archives. I didn't need to drill out or replace any rivits. The write-up I read must have been referring to the earlier models. Please advise on whether or not sealer is required. If I have to, I will try to remove the new seal without destroying it. Thanks...

C'mon guys...I don't want to do the other side yet before I'm sure whether or not I should use an adhesive in the channel before installing the seal. It may be difficult to get the one out that I already installed without adhesive without ruining it. Anybody that has experience in replacing this seal, please advise. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I just did mine. The seal is required to keep water out of the door. (The one on the outside edge of the vent window frame). It is a poor fit at best. Silicone would probably do a better job, but it makes it kinda hard to install between the window frame and the door.

EDIT: Sorry, I just re-read your post. I did not use any sealer in the window channel.

Question: How did you replace the vent window inside (triangle) rubber without removing the riveted on channel?

First, to clarify, my original question was whether or not to use sealed in the inside rubber (triangle). I didn't and didn't even think about it until after it was in.

As for how did I do it... First I pulled the old one out...it was in pretty bad shape so it didn't take a lot of effort. I cleaned up the frame with steel wool including the inside the channels. Then I just worked it in. I started with the side that goes along the window run. It has the tabs that fit into what I'll call aligning holes. Then I just worked the gasket into place. I used an old, dull, small, flat blade screwdriver to work the bottom edge fully in. I expected it to be a more difficult job but it was actually pretty easy. Hopefully I won't have trouble with the other side!

Did you use sealer for the triangle piece? Let me know as I haven't done the other side yet. Thanks for the reply. I just started putting my car back together after getting back from paint. I'm on the weather stripping portion...what a PITA! I'll send pics once I figure out how to do that.

I did not use any sealer around that triangle piece. I don't believe that ford used any. I used dry silicone to lube up the piece, and it slipped right in!

There is a small piece of rubber for the outer frame, at the front. It is a small piece that screw on. Don't forget that one.

Now the NEW vent window locks were a PITA. Not talking about the roll pin (I used a small drill bit to drive it out). The main shaft holes had to be drilled out.

Today I cleaned up and reinstalled the trim around the roof rail. Didn't install the weatherstripping yet. Yesterday I did the trunk, hood/cowl seal, and left door weatherstrip. I'll be glad when this phase is over! Thanks for the clarification on the vent window. My lower (outer pieces) were backordered; I'll finish the vent windows when they come in.

Now THAT is true!!!! I just replaced mine also. Mine is a 67 as well, but I did not have to remove any rivet. It was actually a screw.

I did not use any sealant along any portion of the vent window weatherstrip. It went in well, and appears to be sealed (MUCH better than the original rotted pieces)

I used an endmill and slowly worked the opening of the vent handle by hand. I couldnt come up with a good mount in the drill press and the mini-mill is still in boxes from my move. It probably took about an hour for each window, but the fit is very nice, smooth and solid. I was VERY un-impressed by drake on the fit of those handles. They SHOULD have done a much better job on that!

I looked at your Car Domain site...nice job on the car! What a transformation! What's the estimated time for completion? I'm hoping for late Fall (optimistic but maybe not realistic) for mine.

Thanks for the compliments... I havent really touched the car since late July of last year... that is when I painted it. I really need to update the pictures once I get my new camera.

Through a rough series of event.... My wife got really upset at that time spent on the car and we put the house up for sale, then moved. Then it was a bit of remodling in the new house etc... I worked a bit on the doors and windows putting things back together and then ended up VERY sick and a week in the hospital and now just sitting at the house for a month.... I'm trying and I'm sorry for such a sad story.

In summary, I will hope to finish by the end of the summer... the whole car is assembled (body wise) and I need to install the new interior, bumpers and deal with electric fan issues... thats about it.

Wish me luck and hopefully I will get it finished.

Good luck on yours and maybe we will finish together.

Oh, I just actually updated my cardomain site with the minimal pictures I have... at least its better than nothing. I promise more when that new camera arrives (end of the week)
