Whenever I've been driving around for a while, maybe to go get gas or something, and restart the vert, the starter sounds really weak and struggles to start the car. Could it be the battery? Or maybe the starter motor itself? I know it's something simple, but it's pretty annoying...and embarrassing.

I have the same problem except mine cranks slow all the time.
I just did a 3G alt upgrade because I thought maybe the battery wasn't getting charged properly.(that and because I'm getting an electric fan)
I'm expecting the red top I ordered to be in sometime this week(hopefully) so I can let you know if that helps.

If your battery hasn't been replaced in a while that's probably the culprit.

Mine was also the battery even though it was only 2 years old.

Do you have L/T headers on your car? Your starter could be suffering from heat soak if you have L/T headers on there.

If not, check to make sure that all your grounds are good and replace the battery for good measure.

Also check your grounds, make sure they are all good. That could certainly cause your problems.

I have this identical problem but its because my LTs come really close to the starter and heat soak it. Solution, run really heavy heat resistant cable to the starter, that should help it with all the built up electrical resistance from the heat.

Move the negative Battery connection from the timing cover (if it's there) to the head to get a better ground.

It's definitely heat soak from the headers. I had that problem with my stock starter so I bought a mini high torque starter off of ebay and haven't had the problem in 2 years.

The timing cover is that big aluminum piece that fits over your timing chain. The factory battery negative connection goes to it rather than a head.
