Answered your own question, huh? haha... too bad that doesn't happen w/ all the exhaust, gears and intake threads that pop up daily. Thanks for the link though, I just bookmarked that page.

It's not the VIN you want to read, but the sticker on the door

Rear Axle
The Rear axle ratio and type.

L - Limited Slip Differential
C - Conventional Differential
1 2.87C 2 3.55C 4 3.42C
5 3.27C 6 3.73C 68 2.73C
7 3.07C 78 2.73C 8 2.73C
A 3.08L A 3.63C AM 2.73L
B 2.47C BM 2.73L C 3.27L
D 3.42L E 3.27L EZ 3.08L
F 3.45C HZ 3.08L J 3.85C
K 3.55L LE 3.27L M 2.73L
ME 3.27L R 3.45R SE 3.27L
VM 2.73L W 3.73L X5 3.27C
Y 3.08C Z 3.08L Z5 3.27C

Also, there is a tag on the rear end cover that will tell you what ratio came from the factory. On the tag will be something like 2L73 or 3L08 or 3L27.

I believe he is talking about a mechanical speedcal from like dallasmustang or a place like that not the one you use from a handheld programmer because yes you cannot change the 98 (maybe 97) and olders gear ratio with them.
