Vortech btm ??'s

I'm trying to run the vortech btm that came with the kit (part #5462) and had a question on the wiring. The kit came with an adapter that plugs in between the coil and factory harness, with 4 wires coming out of it. ( white, red, orange, and black) The wires coming from the btm are white, red and orage. The wiring diagram pic in the vortech instructions say to hook up the white wire from the harness to the white on the btm, but then the picture shows the red and orange wire from the harness going to the red wire to the btm, and finally the black from the harness hooking into the orange part of the btm. But the harness comes pre wired, and there is no way to hook both the orange and red from the harness into the red from the btm. I would think that the colors match up, but if I do that the black wire wouldn't go to anything. I have another ground wire coming from the btm, but the instructions say to ground that out, which I did, so I have an extra wire?? Should I hook the black (from the harness) wire into the orange from the btm, and the red from the harness to the red in the btm and leave the orange not hooked up? Any suggestions?

This is the pic that showing hooking the two wires ( red and orange ) into the red coming from the btm.

Any ideas?

The diagram shows the red and orange from the harness already tied together. Does yours have a seperate connector for each of the four colored wires from the harness? If so I would cut the connector off from one wire, red or orange, doesn't matter, and splice that wire in with the other so that it followed the diagram exactly as shown.

In my BTM kit I had a single wire that split into two. If you have this you connect the red and orange into the two side and slip the one side onto the designated color wire. I don't know this off the top of my head but if you want a picture I can go take one in two seconds and show you what I mean. Just let me know.

The one I have is split into 4, and they all have their own seperate connector. And I don't see a single wire that splits into two. Maybe I don't have the right adapter harness? If so, I guess I might have to splice the two together.

You guys know I'm happy to oblige with the pictures. Here is what we got.

Coming from the plug you have 4 wire colors, Red Orange Black White that are supposed to go into 3 colors, Red Orange White.
Black - Orange
White - White
Red AND Orange - Red

Colors on the right are going to the MSD box, colors on the left are coming from the coil


If I can get you a better picture (my camera has focus problems at night) please let me know and I can pull the wiring out better but you should be able to get it from this.

Yes and no. The BTM that comes with the Vortech kits is not quite the same as a 6BTM that you would purchase from MSD. The Vortech units do not accept 'pills' to give you a different rev limit. As far as other differences I am unsure if it's just as good as the 6BTM or not, maybe someone else will have more info.

Will the 6AL work with the Vortech kit (as in the S/C kit) yes. An ignition system is stand alone when compared to the S/C. The BTM that comes with the S/C looks very similar to a 6AL or 6BTM, but isn't quite.

So the BTM pulls timing as the boost increases. Is this a necessary feature? I just want to know if it's worth installing my 6AL now or selling it off because the kit comes with the BTM.

No it isn't a necessary feature if you have a tune but it's a good feature if you don't. A lot of guys save 'em for when they get a bad tank of gas, they can bump back some timing and stop pinging. If I were in your shoes I would sell off the BTM from the kit and use the 6AL, but it's all a preference. Good luck!

I appreciate the advise! I wanted to install my 6AL anyway just because. I'm still trying to fight the decision to go with SC or H/C/I!

Thanks HGFirehazard, I finally found that connector, seems to work fine now. But had another question for you, or anyone else w/a vortech. Did the serpentine belt that came with the blower fit? The one that came with the kit seems to be to short, and I tried my serpentine that was on the car before, and its to long. I don't know if my original one just stretched. Is it just the stock lenght belt used for the accessories? If so, maybe I'll just get a new one, if its not the stock lenght, anyone know what lenght is required.
