Wanna run 13 or slower!

I am looking for a car to buy with the goal of running at the track every month and being able to compete in the street class which has a maximum ET of 13.0

I want an auto as I already have a manual tranny vehicle and am looking for consistantsy. My track has competitions every month, not test n tunes....ie you lose, you go home.

Is the 99-04 years my best bet and bang for the buck model to purchase and mod to reach 13's? Which mods can get me there? I have been reading a lot over the last month, gears, tune, exhaust, etc....

Or should I start with a s197 model and mod on? Obviously more cash up front but they do start with 300hp.

Is the auto tranny (any year) gonna hold up to racing one weekend 10 times a year? Is the auto different from 04 to 05 and up years?

I appreciate all input and for putting up with newbie questions!

The automatic transmission on the 05+ GT is different from the 99-04. The 99-04 is a 4 speed AOD. I would say it suffers badly from not enough stall speed. The 05+ is a 5 speed auto and will get out of the hole much better than the 99-04 in stock form because it has a looser converter and nicer torque band.

Personally, I would recommend the 05+. It comes stock with 300hp, 31 spline axles and you'll be a lot closer to the goal of 13's to start with. It also has a more advance engine management and should be more consisten run to run. I can't comment on the durablity of the transmission in the 05, but it should be just fine. There are plenty of people putting down 400+rwhp in the 05+ GTs and running 12s and I haven't heard of any major problems with the auto.

I'm gonna beat the dead horse here and suggest the 05+ also... Stock, they come with more power, and hitting 12's shouldn't require much more than gears, bolt-ons, tune, and maybe a better converter?

There's always the FI route too!

If you have the coin then an 05 would be the car. With an auto all you need is gears, CAI and a tune and you will be deep in the 13's. Some 4.10s will do ya just fine and it can be the canned tune that most CAI kits come with. Hell just buy the Ford drag pack and it has everything you need.

Plus like was mentioned it has a far better computer and will be a more consistant car because the computer can adjust better for temperature and humidity changes as well as engine temprature changes. Consistancy is key to the class you want to racein.

actually the 96-04 are AODE e meaning electronic, the 04 model being a 4R75W while the rest being 4R70W.

For 13seconds a 05+ is easy. If you want to build a drag car for 11's or the like i'd recomend 99+ as the there's not a lot out to build the 05+'s 5R55 and parts for the SN95 models are usually cheaper for mods.

Kinda hard to beat Irene or Robert in that class. Robert still running his white GT vert out there?

Hey if you go there ask for Lucky Keefner, I forget but he may still be there if not just dont go to Richard. Trust me.
Give John Torres a call at the Harley lot on Dairy and tell him Bill sent you and see if he has something you may want. If you find something he will take good care of you. He and I used to race all the time there and he knows what will run well in that class as thats what I set his cars up for. He just sold a one owner 2000 SS with 50K on it for $6000 I think.

Small world dude.....you use to live here? Irene is running 12.9 class since they changed the rules. Dave got a new challenger and is now running that....runs high 12's. His face got all twisted when he found out I was looking for a mustang!! I dont know Roberts white GT vert. I use to run my 04 viper truck until I blew out the clutch. Best time I got was 13.58 @ 103 when stock. Way too hard to be consistant when your banging gears in a 5000 lbs truck.

Robert is the guy that always helps setup the track and fixes the generator. He has a white 88 GT vert with an AOD that runs 13.9 all day long. John had told me Irene sold her WS6 and is running something else now, forget what though. Ive had some good times at that track but when they opened the SCCA track right there then I always did that instead and changed the cars setup.
Man I miss that little rock in the ocean. Really want to move back there some day.

Hey do me a favor! Go over to Tin Yings and send me some Char Siu and some crispy pork and some char siu fried rice. Oh, and a fried rice spam musubi from Mikes Chevron

They did a big overhaul last year and put in a nice new block building for the tower. Ran power and everything. Insurance dude made em put up fences all around the staging area....no more walking thru and talking with drivers before they run unless your a driver. Real pricey to race now too. Test n tune, entrance fee, racing fee for non member $100!

I havnt seen that white vert stang in a while. Lots of folks not running via a lack of funds. Lots of layoffs here. Economy is the worse I have seen in the 21 years I have lived here.

$100!!!?!?! WTFOMGBBQ!!! I was pissed at $35 and only getting 4-5 runs in! $100 is highway robery! Are the taking ques from the damn golf courses? Thats just stupid. You could go run all day at the SCCA track for $20 and that included free drinks and lunch!

Thats one other thing I like here. There is a 1/8th track thats only $10 to run at and you get in as many runs as you want! Last time I git tired of running and just stopped. That really sucks.

How long you been running there? I used to go all the time. I am the guy that cocked his red FRC Corvette sideways at 80 mph and almost T-boned Irene but I pulled out of it at the last minute. Also ran a 94 red Firebird Formula at the same time that John put in the wall the same night I slid sideways.
My last run there was in early 2007 or late 2006. I ran my 89 Red/silver GT and was with Tasha and her 03 red Terminator vert.
My buddy John just ran there not too long ago before he sold his orange 99 Camaro SS.

Just so members here see how good the mainland has it, tell us how much a gallon of gas and milk is as well as the cost of a loaf of regular old white bread.

Did they ever finish the bird sanctuary boardwalk at Mudd Flats?

First of all the mudflats deck was done years ago but no parking lot was set up....so they dicked around for several years and now its openned.

Gas is $3.74 cheap $3.94 for premium 91 octane. Milk is the same gallon $7.99, loaf of regular bread safeway brand $4.29 !! Sticker shock for sure for the visitors.

I ran my vipertruck in 04 and 05. After that I just watched.

I drove a 06 GT Stang today. I found out it was a base GT model. No frills whatsoever on the interior. It was actually depressing it was so plain and ugly IMO. The car claims to have only 16,350 miles but interior looked more like 66k! Cig burns, torn backseat, dirty carpet etc.... The cheap plastic auto shifter was horrible. What was Ford thinking? I need to find one with the premium interior. It did have an aftermarket exhaust which sounded quite nice. Car felt slow upon WOT. After the fact I noticed the traction control button. I imagine it pulls way harder with TC off?

My search continues for my car.

8$ is very expensive for a gallon of milk. I just paid 1.91 for a gallon here in kansas, but we have plenty of cows.

Sounds like that 06 was a real let down. It is amazing how badly some people take care of their cars, and in only 16k miles. The interior of my 97 is better than that, and I have 166k miles.

I do agree that a few things on the S197 feel a bit cheaper compared to the previous cars. The carpets aren't as thick, the plastics a bit thinner and cheaper, and I can tell the sheet metal on the car is thinner. However, it is still the better car to drive. The chassis is sooo much more rigid and more composed than the previous generations and there are a lot less interior rattles.

I do agree fully with you on the point that the S197 feels slow. That's just the general feel of the engine. It has a very wide torque band compared to the previous 4.6, but still makes around the same peak torque. The same peak torque with more weight makes it feel slower, but after you rev it out it starts to really move. I love the way it sounds taking off in 1st and running to about 3rd. The automatic keeps the rpms up there with a looser torque converter and tight ratios.

Yeah, thats what I ment with Mud Flats. That deck was there forever but never opened and that was just stupid. Give John a call at Harley. He has several lots on Oahu too and can bring over anything you want.
Good luck with the hunt too. I will try and help in any way I can. I have had a few SN95 cars and can help out quite a bit with mods if you go that route.

BTW, Gas: $2.09, Milk: $2.09, Bread: .89.
I still miss Maui like crazy though and would eat saimein and drink water to move back.
Where do you work there?

I have a wholesale company, selling suntan lotions, glasses etc... Been doing it for 21 years.

bhuff....I know what you mean about the torque curve....after it gets going it then feels faster.....change of gears would prolly make it feel so much lighter.

I found a sweet 05 with a supercharger, 410 gears, spec clutch etc.....only 7k miles, one owner etc........too bad its on Kauai!

I just think the sn-95s are easier because they're cheaper. You get a 99-04GT you have a 260hp car that will run low to mid 14s. From there bolt-ons and a set of tires will get you into the 13s easily.

What about a car with close to 100k on the odometer? Is that too much for an auto tranny or engine? Do they hold up past 100k or is it time for a rebuild etc..?
