I am going round and round with my insurance company. The warranty number is what is listed as the VIN on my 66 coupe. I just had the car at the DMV and was inspected, and comparing the stamped number on the left inner fender to the warranty number, the state of AZ is using that number as the VIN. Geico still does not recognize that as a valid vin for 1966, but issed a new card anyway with the warranty number. How many of 65-67 owners have the warranty number as the VIN?

Warranty Number

Warranty number and VIN is the same. Do a search under Mustang VIN decoder and you will see the door tag that has the Warranty number listed.

Had the same problem with my insurance company, none of them recoginze the 11 digit VIN they used way back when.

Thanks, Mike. It can be tough to deal with the DMV, considering they are never wrong........

No, the warrranty number is stamped in the inner fender, and on the door tag. The girl at geico told me some older vin numbers are not in their database, and their computer automatically treats it as an invalid vin.

I do. My 65 coupe has only warranty number on driver side fender under hood.

The vin number and the warranty number is the same number . The tag on the door is the warranty tag ,it has all the vehicle information . DMV is not supposed to use the tag for verification but they do anyway ,it says on the tag for warranty use only . The vin is actually stamped in at least 3 places on the inner fender aprons, one in the opening on the front fender ,the rest are hidden under the fenders .

This information sounds correct and seems to be what is commonly practiced. However, this is a picture from the Ford Mustang manual 1965 and it clearly shows a distinct difference between Warranty # and VIN #., thus, my confusion.

Only difference is there is a space between numbers ,i still have the door tag and the fender apron numbers on my 69 and they match . The other numbers on the tag are motor ,transmission ,body color ,interior ,body trim and rear axle and DSO or district sales office

There is a slight possibility one or more numbers were stamped wrong either on the tag or the body ,i have seen this a few times ,usually one number wrong
