So i was cleaning and taking apart the front hub looking thing on my t-5 tranny that goes over the front shaft. i have the tailshaft off and am about to put it together, but what i noticed was that the front shaft has a little play in it. will it have that because the tailshaft and top cover are off? I checked the front seal and bearing in there and it all looked happy, i just wanted to make sure it tightens up a little bit when i put the top cover and tailshaft back on. the picture below kinda shows what shaft im talking about..

It's normal because one of the shaft's supports, the pilot bearing, is not present.

In and out movement is what you want to avoid

I always thought you wanted in and out movement with your shaft.

Oh now I get it the shaft your thinking of is different than the one I was thinking of. I was thinking tailshaft what were you thinking.

Damn... I've been doing it wrong for years and years! I mean... I've tried (experimentally) rotating the shaft but that just never felt right. It's not like there's ever been a set of formal instructions for this sort of thing.

to be serious.... the tailshaft has shims that hold the output shaft support bearing in all the way, so with the tailshaft off, this will loosen up and your shafts will have play in them. if you're still getting in and out play after you put your topcover and tailhousing on, try shimming it right, and then you may have a problem
