Ok, so I have a T5 with a 204 "service" casting number that was made in 1985-89, I was wondering if that means if its a SSP tranny?

If you look you'll see that the 1985-89 Factory 5.0 T5's were rated for 265 lb/ft and my 85-89 Service tranny is rated for 300; I guess for police abuse (if this is a police T5). Then in 1990 they were all rated for 300 lb/ft anyway and the Service T5 dissapeared.

Or was it some kind of dealer service department replacement T5?

I've never heard of an SSP only trans, maybe Service means it was replaced under warranty by a dealer or something?

I'd guess it's a replacement T5, not an original. I've never heard of an SSP specific T5.

I thought it might be a dealer replacement too, but did they actually have the sense to put a stronger tranny in if it blew?

I just noticed that 2-3rd gear are up to 1990-91 spec, I guess thats what gives it a 300 lb/ft rating. This T5 worked out perfectly for me it has the gearing and torque rating that my '91 is supposed to have and unlike a '90+ T5 it has a 7-tooth speedo gear; which is what I needed for the 273's that I'm stuck with right now. (My car used to be an AOD)

It must have been rebuilt before I got it, no leaks and it shifts like silk, even after the 11k miles I put on it.

I'm not 100%..... but I think all of the SSP were automatics.

All the ones that I have seen were.

Actually the majority of them were 5 speeds...odd that you've seen autos.

I used to think SSPs were all autos up until last year.

One thing that bugs me is, if "service" means a dealer replacement then why did it disappear in 1990 when all T5s were 300lb/ft anyway. Meaning that there was no need to make a better T5 for the SSP, (if the SSP had a better one during '85-89.)

SSP's came optional from department to department depending what they wanted. So some were and some werent.Just like others had deffrent options and so forth like A/C spot lights and i'm pretty sure some had an optional roll bar's in them? The reason you might have one that says service and if it's rated to 300FTLBS is because they would put in a beefy one so they dont replace it again OR so they know it's a reman?Go snooping here this is another site i'm on for my SSP coupe. Welcome to the SSP Mustang Page! peace
