Water pump and crank pulleys dont line up.

Hey guys,

So I had a belt shred on me recently and later discovered a seized smog pup. So I bypass the pump with a shorter belt and now I notice my belt getting a bit tattered on one edge.

I looked a little closer to see the water pump and crank pulley are a little off from each other causing the belt to run against the forward edge of the water pump pulley.

Is there a way to shim out the pullley on the waterpump pulley so it lines up straight or is something wrong here.

That is one way to fix it. Just cut a piece of round aluminum out of some 1/8" flat stock and drill the holes for the bolts. This actually happens a lot. Most of the underdrive W/P pullies don't have a lip on them. My W/P has the same problem and I just use a underdrive pulley on it.

mine looked like that for a while. when sitting still it looked bad but once the engine was running it tracked just fine. my belt never broke either.

I may be wrong on this....but, I want to say there is supposed to be a thin spacer where the pulley mounts onto the water pump shaft that tends to fall off when people remove the pulley.

I know I had a problem like that when I was putting my motor together and the water pump pulley bolts came into contact with the pump itself, locking it up. So when I rummaged through my misc bolts and whatnot, I found a spacer that had a hole in the middle that fit on the pump shaft and the bolt holes lined right up. When I put the spacer back on everything fit perfectly.

Just food for thought I suppose.

The shim should take care of it, unless the housing is bent of cracked. For this reason I carry a spare serpentine belt, stuff happens!

Looks like im going to need a new belt anyway. The one thats on there has stretched since i bought it a week ago and now its barely touching itself when it loops around the alternator near the tensioner. (no smog pump) Im sure it will only get worse.

Brought this back from the dead but I figure I make it useful if someone searches for it.

Turns out the belt was routed incorrectly, It still fit but was just installed wrong. So if you have this problem, try routing the belt a different way and that should take care of it.

is your harmonic balancer installed all the way on the crank snout??? a balancer not pushed back far enough on the crank will cause pulley misalignment.

an easy way to check, find out if its the WP pulley or the crank pulley that is off.

find which one lines up with the rest like the AC, PS and alt the one that isnt aligned will isloate your problem.
