waterpump leak

They leak at the bottom when they go out. Thats normal.

Yea, water pumps leak from the front seal. They have a drain hole to allow the water to leak out if/when the front shaft seal starts to go.

As for water pumps, IMHO, I say get new, but the more important issue is the gaskets and the bolts used.

IMHO, ***** the cr*p gaskets that come with the pump, get REAL gaskets - Felpro! And, IMHO, now is a good time to upgrade to SS bolts. But, Totally Stainless often takes weeks to ship. Still, IMHO, well worth it!

As I remember, I got the "Engine Kit 5.0L EFI SBF" (6-0897) (~$45), and the the "Stud Bolt Kit for 302 SBF EFI Water Pump" (6-9029)(~$30). Plus, ~$10 for shipping and handling.
Check and verify those numbers and prices before ordering!

Also, it took ~5 weeks before I received them.
So, if you need something now, I'd suggest asking before you order!

All of the the packages are labeled. You can see what bolts are in each package, and what the package part number is. Something that I wish that Totally Stainless would do for their catalog, or web site.

It all depends on what bolts you want. If you want just the water pump bolts, it seems like kits 6-9029 and 6-0592 are all you need. Check their catalog, or call, for prices on those kits.

Kind of pricy but if you break one these are exact reproductions.

Some hints to speed up cahnging the water pump...

Take a cardboard box, & turn it upside down. Count the number of bolts that hold the water pump on, don’t forget to count the 4 funny looking studs too. Poke a hole in the box for each bolt/stud. Arrange the holes in a circular formation, and mark the box at the 12:00 point. When you remove a water pump bolt, put it in one of the holes in the box according to where it came out of the water pump. When you are done, all bolts will be arranged it the exact same order and position that you removed them from the water pump. That makes re-installing them easy, no wondering where does this bolt go.

A long shank tap should be used to chase the dirt & corrosion out of the original threads before you reassemble everything. Cleaning the threads will help prevent the bolts from seizing next time (yes, there will be a next time).

Use lots of antiseize on the bolts to protect them from corrosion and make them easier to remove next time.

See Totally Stainless for replacement stainless steel bolts. Last time I checked, they didn't have the studs. Nice folks, very into cars of all types. They have all kinds of stainless fasteners for almost every car. The prices are very reasonable, less the $10 for the water pump kit without the studs.

I've got a brand new Edelbrock Victor series pump if you're interested.

The Edelbrock high flow water pumps are nice. If you buy a new "Ford" unit it won't be made by Ford directly, Mexico. I bought a new one at Auto Zone with a lifetime warranty for $40.

I traced the new water pump shape on a piece of cardboard. As I took the stock bolts off I pressed the bolts into the cardboard. This way I knew where they went. Each bolt is a different size.

buy new bolts. cheap insurance. I have broken cheap rotten bolts before and it is a pain to get the bolts back out.

Yea, there are a few sizes and types.
Specifically, there are 4 different sizes/types for the 7 bolts/studs. :-O

I found it easier to look at a picture that someone posted, verify that it was correct, and use that.
