I was going a compression test tonight, and when i would turn the engine over with the coil wire unplugged, the coil would arc onto the base of the coil. It was very visible, and could easily be heard. I've been trying to find out whats wrong with my car, so is it supposed to do this? Is this normal with the coil wire unplugged? Does that mean its a bad coil?

The juice has to go somewhere. It takes the next least path of resistance, which is shorting to the bracket or through your hand if you touch it.

Completely normal Matt. The electricity that would normally go through the coil wire, then be distributed through the dizzy, now has to go somewhere else. In this case, the base of the coil (in my case it was the coil bracket) was the closest and easiest place for the electricity to flow. Don't get your hand anywhere near it, that crap freaking hurts!! I wonder how many volts/amps it is?

Hardly any amps (relatively) and lots of volts. That is why it [generally] does not fry you.

Yea I've been shocked by 15,000 volts in science class before, hurt like a mofo, but didn't do any damage. I've also been shocked by our electric fence countless times, I don't know how many volts that is, but it hurts too.

I dont know, but it isnt the coil (at idle at least).

Didnt you have ignition issues (perhaps)? Did a new coil or wires help. I would make sure the wires are very separated - one can have a high speed misfire from plug wires arcing through eachother.

Chris, Ernan is a big guy - I am not going to comment on his English.
