weird noise from shifter...

So yesterday i just noticed this tinking noise coming from my shifter/tranny area. So i took of my shifter boot so i could just hear better.
The sound happens when im decelerating not when accelerating. And it will happen in all gears and even neutral. So i don't know if it is really the tranny that is making the noise. But from like 20mph to zero like when coming to a stop there is a tinking/clunking sound coming from the shifter area.
I don't know much about a tranny or a shifter so any help is appreciated.

and it also makes the noise when the car is off and im in neutral going downhill. it's just like a clunking sound. and i can almost feel it through the shifter.

You said it also does it in neutral, is that only when the car is moving? Sounds to me like a u-joint going tits up. Does it also clunk when you put it in reverse? Is it a single clunk, or is it continuous?

yeah it neutral only when the car is moving.
i went on a hill and shut the car off and went down in neutral and it still made the clunk noise.
and yes when going into reverse sometimes there is clunk. just a single one though.
