Anybody here welded their axle tubes? Is it really even worth the time spent?

yes. if you plan on launching hard on sticky tires it is. if its strictly a street car then no it wont be worth the time spent.

It was fun to do. I don't think I would pay someone to do it though. I think you really only need to do it if you are an all out racer making some big HP.

Haven't really spent much time researching the 8.8, but if it has a cast center section like just about every other axle out there you would be much better having a professional weld it than doing it yourself.

Welding cast is tricky

this might sound dumb but what is the point of welding your axle tubes?

From what I have read the axle tubes are a slip fit into the pumpkin and when using slicks or even drag radials you can actually cause the axle tube to turn in the pumpkin and cause all kinds of expensive carnage for your rear end.

Imo even if it costs a couple hundred bucks thats cheap insurance considering the $$ most people spend moding the stang.

Rocketman, thats an excellent picture. Did you have your 'torque boxes' welded as well?

I've heard quite a few people say it kinda "strengthens" them so they dont snap so easy

I've done all the welding myself on my car using a Millermatic 175 gas shielded MIG welder which is a 220V welder.

I haven't done the Torque Boxes yet. But plan on it when I change my LCA's to the new Steeda Aluminum weight jackers. I don't go to the track much and don't run slicks or DR. I welded my axle tubes just to see if I could. Welding the tubes to the cast housing is not that difficult if you have any welding experience at all. I've also welded on MM full length SFC.

Making it strong however requires a bunch of steps like pre-heating, prolonged cool down period, and high nickel content rods

Again, you can snap these under stock power with sticky tires.

Traction is the issue here, not power.
